Athletics Carnival

There was such a wonderful atmosphere at the Athletics Carnival last Friday.  The Stadium was a sea of colour and joy as the Loreto College community embraced the spirit of this event.  I was so proud of all the Junior School girls as they stretched themselves to try new and challenging experiences. A special acknowledgment goes to Jessica Edwards, our dedicated Physical Education teacher, for investing considerable time in ensuring the carnival's success. The collective teamwork of all staff was certainly evident on the day. A big thank you must also go to our Junior School captains for their leadership, as well as to everyone who attended. Your presence certainly added to the magic of the day.

Cyber Safe Families Workshops

In our commitment to ensuring a safe and secure online environment for our students, we are excited to announce the upcoming Cybersafe Families school parent information session on Tuesday, 19 March, from 6 pm to 7.30 pm in the Performing Arts Centre. This workshop is for Year 4 to Year 8 parents.

In today's digital age, it is crucial for parents and guardians to be well-informed about both the opportunities and threats that the online world presents. This session is designed to provide valuable strategies for creating a cyber-safe home environment.

At Cybersafe Families, they emphasise the importance of fostering suitable, technology-inclusive environments that are appropriate for the different stages of each student's life.

In conjunction with this, students from Year 4 to Year 6 will engage in a workshop during the day to further enrich their understanding.  We highly recommend attendance at this important parent education session.

Finally, for security purposes, I kindly request that all parents and caregivers visiting the Junior School between 8:30 am and 3:20 pm sign in at the Junior School front office. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated, as ensuring the safety of our girls is our top priority.

Place Value Exploration in Year 2

As part of our Mathematics learning in Year 2, we have been focusing on Place Value, understanding how numbers can be partitioned, rearranged, and renamed using their place value parts (hundreds, tens and ones). We have been exploring these concepts through a hands-on approach, including collaborative and games-based learning.

Students particularly enjoyed learning a new game called ‘Race to 999’. Each student made their own place value die and rolled it to collect as many hundreds, tens and ones as they could within two minutes. After the timer ended, students applied their understanding of place value to calculate the number of points collected.  The highest number collected won! We have heard a repeated chorus of “Can we play again?” ever since.

We have also been focusing on renaming numbers based on their place value parts. 145 can be renamed as 1 hundred, 4 tens and 5 ones but did you know that it can also be renamed as 14 tens and 5 ones? Students have enjoyed using number expanders as a helpful visual to explore how numbers can be renamed in various ways using their place value parts.

We are proud of our Year 2 girls for thinking like mathematicians and building their number fluency.

Year 2

Blackbelt Recorder Program

In the Year 2 music classes, students have embarked on an exciting musical journey, the Blackbelt Recorder program, that builds upon their foundational knowledge from previous years in music. This program is designed to challenge and inspire young musicians as they hone their skills on the recorder, a versatile woodwind instrument.

Throughout the program, students delve deeper into music theory, developing a more nuanced understanding of rhythm, melody, and harmony. They explore complex musical concepts such as dynamics, articulation, and phrasing, enhancing their ability to express themselves musically.

The repertoire for Year 2 Blackbelt Recorder encompasses a diverse range of musical styles and genres, including classical, folk, and contemporary pieces. Students learn to interpret and perform these pieces with precision and musicality, showcasing their technical proficiency and artistic expression.

In addition to individual practice, students engage in ensemble playing, learning to collaborate with their peers to create harmonious music as a group. This fosters teamwork, communication, and a sense of camaraderie among students.

The Year 2 Blackbelt Recorder program culminates in a performance showcase where students demonstrate their musical achievements to family and friends. This event not only celebrates their progress but also instils a sense of pride and accomplishment in their musical abilities.

Overall, the Year 2 Blackbelt Recorder program provides students with a comprehensive musical education that empowers them to become confident and skilled musicians. Through dedication, practice, and passion for music, students embark on a fulfilling musical journey that will enrich their lives for years to come.
