Traffic and parking in Talbot Grove

Please ensure that parent and caregivers uphold the parking rules on Talbot Grove. Parents please don’t leave your vehicle unattended during school hours and keep to the maximum 2 minutes parking at all other times. For the safety of all students and staff please help the flow of traffic down Talbot Grove.

Friendly reminder to have the conversation at home about pedestrian road safety and crossing the roads, especially using the lights and watching and waiting for traffic to give way. Students should never be looking down at their phones whilst walking across a road.

Swimming carnival

Please note the Year 7-12 Swimming Carnival is being held at Burnside Outdoor Pool on 19 March. Consent forms and information will be sent out via email over the coming days. It is another wonderful College event which demonstrates College spirit. Students are encouraged to participate in a range of events including 50m, 25m and Novelty races. Attendance is compulsory. Students will be arriving and leaving school at normal times on the day.

Role modelling

Role modelling works in relation to virtually everything we do, from how you handle emotions such as frustration and anger, to how you respect and relate to other people and to how you respond to stress and cope with difficulties. It also influences patterns such as eating, exercise, how you look after yourself, and problem solving.

We often remind our girls of the importance of role modelling themselves positively to younger students and to reflect on those people who are positive “influencers” and role models in their lives. Parents are the ultimate role models for their daughters. Areas of role modelling include specifically:

Positive Relationships, taking responsibility for your mistakes, respect and valuing education and learning.

The iconic doll brand “Mattel Barbie” has announced that it will be adding a few new dolls to its Role Models collection to celebrate not only International Women’s Day on 8 March but Barbie’s 65th birthday on 9 March as well. Each of the dolls in the collection is based on real-life actors, athletes, artists, singers, and more from around the world.

“Since 2015, Barbie has been on a mission to honor diverse role models, both modern-day and historical, who break boundaries in their fields to inspire the next generation of girls.

Barbie is shining a light on female role models because every girl imagines she can be anything, but actually seeing that she can makes all the difference. Barbie has honored women or “Sheroes,” including Ibtihaj Muhammad, Misty Copeland, Ava DuVernay, Eva Chen, Ashley Graham, Laurie Hernandez, Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb.

In addition to women breaking boundaries today, Barbie also has a historical line celebrating notable women throughout history.  The Inspiring Women™ dolls pay tribute to incredible heroines like Amelia Earhart, Katherine Johnson and Frida Kahlo.”

Barry House Captain Phoebe Neck embraced the role modelling theme of Barbie on Athletics day in her leadership role of Barry House Captain and her participation and involvement in all field and track events – see photo below.

The Athletics Carnival is a perfect example of positive role modelling. I would like to extend my congratulations to all students for their positive participation in events ranging from the Champions Race to Novelty Events. The number of students helping and volunteers on the day was fantastic and helped create a memorable community spirit for 2024.

Psychological and Health Services

The Psychological Service is thrilled to announce the relaunch of our Loreto Connect SEAD page. The SEAD pages have been carefully redesigned for ease and functionality with pages tailored to our students (Junior and Senior), parents/carers and staff. All pages feature a header with direct links to reputable mental health organisations in Australia.

Parent view:

Underneath this, you will find specific pages which explore a wide range of topics organised by a mental health continuum and colour. A mental health continuum highlights that individual’s mental health is not always “good” or “bad”. It may fall at any point between these states and can be supported at every phase.

Student view:

We have simplified this concept on our SEAD page by asking “How are you feeling today?” to help direct students to topics that may be appropriate to them. On one end, the ‘healthy’ green thumbs up is linked with positive psychology resources e.g., body confidence, while on the opposite end the ‘struggling’ blue hand up is linked with mental health resources e.g., eating habits. Each page houses up to date evidence-based resources and websites related to specific children and adolescent mental health and wellbeing topics.

We have specifically ensured that the resources shared are developmentally appropriate for your child and have a different set for our Junior and Senior school students. For example, the ‘struggling’ topics vary based on the age of the student and are designed to be worked through with an adult present e.g., parent/carer or teacher. Also the Senior School students have access to external supports, reputable apps and online programs, and the Netflix resource “Wanna talk about it?”. As parents, you can see all of these topics.

Please explore these pages and enjoy the resources that have been thoughtfully selected for you by our team. We hope this new page will help to share valuable, trusted resources and educate our Loreto community on important topics.

The Service would like to thank Tim Bond for his support and technical expertise in creating this page and bringing our concept to life for our community.

As always, if you have any specific concerns about your child or young person, please contact your daughter’s Classroom Teacher, or Assistant Principal: Head of Junior School in the Junior School, or the relevant Leader of Student Wellbeing and Academic Care, or Mentor/Subject Teacher in the Senior School. You can also contact the Psychological Service.ext

Year 11 and 12 SEAD

During SEAD we bought all Year 11 and 12 classes together for an early celebration of International Women's Day where the theme for 2024 is 'Invest in women: Accelerate progress'. The Stage 2 Women's Studies class spoke to the students about this year's theme and the reasons why they chose to study this subject which opened up student and staff discussions focusing on advocacy, importance of gender equality and how progress for women and investing in women's human rights benefits us all. Students modeled these skills with team House activities, naming their house after inspiring women- the teamwork was exceptional to watch. We also had mindfulness colouring in activities with global influential, and inspiring women, under the trees in the Indigenous Garden.

Indigenous Social Night

Loreto College played host to the second Indigenous Social Night where we welcomed Indigenous Students across 10 Boarding Schools in the state. The evening began with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by Ashum Owen, before the students moved into The Square to hear from special guest speaker, Marlon Motlop, former Australian Rules Footballer and now musician.

The night involved games and prizes, bench ball competitions in the gym and coming together for dinner over a BBQ to kick off 2024 with their peers.

It was a chance for all Indigenous students across the state to come together, connect and make new friends.

Boarding Life

On Wednesday evening, our boarding school played host to a special gathering of Australian Loreto Schools within our walls and grounds. We warmly welcomed 16 visiting students and teachers to our refurbished home and facilities, and we couldn't have been prouder to showcase our improvements. Our Year 12 leadership and cohort did an exceptional job organising activities to foster connection and camaraderie. The efforts of our dedicated kitchen staff and chefs were evident in the delicious meal and dessert they prepared, which was enjoyed by all in attendance. Hosting such events is a true pleasure, and it's clear to see how proud our boarders are of their home away from home. Well done to everyone involved in making the Loreto Boarding event a success!
