Grade Prep

Preps are learning the first part of the phonics code – a, i, m, s, t. Handwriting is focused on the formation of these letters, with correct starting points. Word reading fluency is based on words using the phonics codes, such as sat, it, Tim and so on. We are reading and discussing picture story books then competing an activity based on the book. For home reading, enjoy a library book with your child each night, and discuss the book.

Grade 1 - 2

Students in grades 1 and 2 are focusing on learning the phonics code for the sounds /ee/. Handwriting is focused on the the Dd. To improve fluency, students are reading stories base on the phonics code. We are reading and discussing picture story books then competing an activity based on the book. For home reading, enjoy a library book with your child each night, and discuss the book.

Phonics decodable readers will be sent home later in the term for home reading.

Years 3 – 6

These classes are reading a class novel, and completing a range of learning tasks based on this novel, including vocabulary exercise, grammar, sentences level writing and text level writing. Years 3/4 are reading Matilda, by Roald Dahl. Year 4/5 are reading Kensuke’s Kingdom, while year 6 are reading Rivet Boy, an historical novel.

English classes are structured around daily review of past learning, fluency, vocabulary, class novel and writing about the class novel. You can assist your child by asking them questions about the novel. Can they retell you what has happened so far? Who are the main characters, where is the story set, what problem is the story about?

FOOD STUDIES

Our Year 9/10 Food Studies are currently involved in a unit of work entitled Caveman to Thermomix.

We are currently looking for fresh seasonal produce that we can use in our classes. If you happen to have an excess of any produce in your garden, we would appreciate donations.
