Round 1 of Debating

Claire Hatchman

Debating Season is well underway at Mt A with our teams having completed Round 1 of the QDU Competition. Our teams across different year levels, including Year 10, 9, 8, and 7, secured victories, showcasing their skills and dedication. For many students, it was their first experience debating competitively, and they stepped up to the plate with enthusiasm! Particularly, our Year 7 teams (pictured) smashed their first prepared topic on the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

The success of our teams in this round was a testament to the hard work put in during training sessions with coaches, where students honed their argumentation, critical thinking, and public speaking skills. Overall, the first round was a promising start to the season, setting a positive tone for future debates and instilling confidence in our debating team.

Lions Update

Kristy Dall

Last weekend, our 5 students participated in the Lions Youth of the Year. They were incredibly impressive advocates for our school, epitomising our graduate vision of creating young people of courage who are able to engage in robust and respectful conversation, playing a role as changemakers in our world.

Throughout the day, the students had an interview with judges and had to present their prepared speech, as well as impromptu questions on the gender pay gap, what programs they would initiate to tackle bullying in school, how to protect Australia’s biodiversity, and whether the ibis or ‘bin chicken’ should be the mascot for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

Congratulations to Milla Barker, Sarah Chew, Preeya Maconochie, Imogen McKenna, and Amaeh Reed. The girls all performed exceptionally, and we are very proud of each of them for their efforts and commitment.

A massive congratulations to Milla Barker and Amaeh Reed who won the public speaking award for their Heats. Milla presented her awesome speech at assembly ahead of International Women’s Day and it featured in the Mount Alvernia Instagram post for IWD.

We are incredibly proud to announce that Amaeh Reed was the overall winner of her Heat and will be continuing on to the next round this Sunday. Good luck Amaeh, we are all behind you!

Dungeons & Dragons

We sent our very first D&D students across to Padua on Tuesday afternoon to join in on their Dungeons & Dragons Club. These students should be recognised for their creativity and courage in making this collaboration come to life. Thank you to Padua staff for looking after our students and Padua students for welcoming them in!
