Our Senior students headed out on Thursday 15th February to participate in their Summer sport options. Fielding teams in cricket, softball, volleyball, tennis and lawn bowls, the teams fortunate enough to be outside enjoyed a beautiful summer's day.
Boys Cricket team had a win under captain Millar H. who showed great leadership and hit two sixes in a row. Millar and Tim K. were the best players and Matthew M. took the catch of the day. This win qualified the team for the Southern Metro Finals Series beginning on Tuesday 27th February (read below).
The Boys and Girls Volleyball teams had a fun and fantastic day. Girls A and B and Boys A and B all won their round games to make it to the finals, where unfortunately the competition was too strong. Girls Teams wrap-up: Kimsrong C. inspired the team throughout and Marsha K. and Dilay D. had great games. Sarah C was voted as the best teammate who always kept her head and supported her team.
Our Lawn Bowls team took out the Beachside win. This senior team of Lachie B. Lily S. Chloe D. and Max L. all from Year 12 have loved playing lawn bowls every year and now in their final year of school, have made it to the Southern Metro Final. This will be held at Hampton Bowls on 22nd March. This is the same day as the Year 7 sports day. I'm sure they can show our Chelt. Sec Juniors just how it's done.
Our Year 9 and Year 10 students join together to create an Intermediate group. This can sometimes be a challenge for Year 9 because it creates a tough competition for team selections. This is a great way for students to begin interacting with peers outside of their age group. There were no team wins in the Intermediate Division but some outstanding performances were noticed. Lachlan M. in Boys Cricket who was an excellent player and team mate and Daniel T. and Harrison R. who were very encouraging and helpful to the new volleyball players. Thank you to our senior students Abbey, Owen and Noah for their coaching assistance.
On Tuesday 27th February, our winning Beachside Cricketers headed to Lloyd Park in Langwarrin to take on Dromana Secondary College, in the quarterfinal of the SMR Finals Series. Opening the batting Millar H. and Owen K. settled in to assess Dromana's bowling attack. With the opening few overs consisting of a mix of dot balls and fours, our batsman were carefully selecting their scoring opportunities. After a stunning partnership of 70, Owen was caught behind, with a score of 21. Charlie A. (aka Buckets) arrived at the crease with a level of patience never seen in a classroom. Charlie calmly knocked out nine singles and patiently waited at the non-striker's end, while Millar took charge of the game. Charlie went on to make 50, while Millar with just a few balls left of the T20 game made 102. What an outstanding performance by Millar, a stunning knock from the Captain.
With Cheltenham now defending 186 Jack S. opened the bowling in a blistering fashion. A wicket on the first ball, followed by two more in the over had Dromana's top order in trouble. One Dromana player steadied their game, scoring an impressive 84. Dromana bowled out for 141.
Wickets: Jack S. 4, Owen K. 1, Rudi C. 1, Lachi O. 2, Charlie A. 2
Fielding: Jacob K. (the non-cricket player) 2 great catches.
The team now enter the semi-final on March 7th against local neighbours Bentleigh Secondary College. If successful will play the final on the same afternoon. Thank you to Mr Gibson for taking the te
