Building an Engaging Learning Community

5/6 Learning Space

We have had a wonderful start to the year in the 5/6 Learning Space. Our students have been very busy with their learning this term.

In Mathematics we have been learning about addition and subtraction and reading and calculating the elapsed time.

In Reading we have been reading our class novel, ‘Wonder’ and exploring the key themes of relationships, diversity and kindness. The students have written responses to the text and shared their key understandings, made predictions and identified connections between the text to other texts and their own lives.

Students have written their own narrative texts and we are currently working on the writer’s process of planning, drafting, editing and publishing with a variety of narrative prompts.

A highlight for the term was our 5/6 Camp. We went to Camp Rumbug in Foster. Below are some photos of our camp experiences and the students highlights.

This is what our 5/6 students had to say about camp...

Building a raft was so fun. My team was Anneke, Evie N, Flynn, Summer and Clarke. It was so fun and our boat was the only one that didn't sink! - Charlotte

The cabins were really fun, we had like 10 people in our cabin. The cabin was huge and I was the only one who brought a watch so both nights I woke up to see Raine looking over to me asking for the time. The showers were hectic, we could only have like 30 second showers because there was so many people same with getting ready the bathroom was always full. - Billie

We had raft building and that was the best thing by far. We floated easily with five people on it, but we were so hot we jumped in just for fun, o that was the best by far and when we were trying to get up on the raft and it was so hard. - Charlie

The flying fox was my favourite activity because we got to go across the lake, even though I'm very scared of heights I still went on it and wasn't scared, except for all the screaming I did  and after that I lost my voice. We got to go two time each with a partner. My partner was Zara and we both really enjoyed the flying fox. - Ella

The first activity on the second day was tree climbing. It was a big gum tree with a ladder at the start. And at the top of the ladder  there were pegs coming out of the tree. I got half way and then it got windy so I wanted to get down. - Evie N

The bus drive was painfully long. It was about 3 hours on a bus going through windy roads. Luckily some of us bought games. As we were on the bus we saw wallabies, kangaroos and echidnas! - Evie H

On Friday we did the canoeing and zip line. I liked the zip line because I am not scared of heights and Clarke and I got stuck on the zipline and getting stuck was fun. - Flynn

On the first day I thoroughly enjoyed raft building because we got to see how the rafts were made so we knew how to make them. When we set sail over the lake our raft slowly started to break. One by one we fell off. Finally, Edith was the only survivor. The mud run was tiring and we got filthy. We army crawled through mud and jumped in it. Fun, but dirty. Overall these were my absolute favorite activities! - Indie

This is all about my experience at Camp Rumbug. All the activities where so fun, there were four activities each day, but there was only two on the first day because we arrived late afternoon. I know that all the kids in grades younger than me will enjoy this camp. -Maisy

On day one of Camp Rumbug when we got there, we all got dressed in our old clothes to start the mud run. My friends, Maisy, Zara, Harriet and Bella did a challenge to see who got the muddiest. And Maisy and Harriet ended up winning. We also got to pick how many times we went around. I went around three times; once all together and once with Ella, Maisy and Zara and once with Bella. And it was super fun so that's why I loved the mud run the best. - Mabel

My highlight from Camp Rumbug was definitely doing the raft building. It was really fun, challenging and I learned a lot, like how to do a figure 8 knot. I was in a group with Raine, Shataya, Tahlia, Jack and Finn. My second favorite activity was probably zip lining, it was so fun when we did the lake zip line. The first time I went down with Tay and the second time I went down with Tahlia. I was in the biggest cabin with Charlotte, Shataya, Anneke, Mabel, Masiy, Ella, Tahlia, Raine and Billie. It was so much fun, it was unquestionably the BEST camp ever! - Matilda

On the 21st of February we arrived at Camp Rumbug. We did lots of activities through the days but my favorite by far my favorite activity was raft building. I was in a group with Finn, Matilda, Jack Finn, Raine and Shataya. We made a very successful raft, it made it all the way there and back but  lots of people fell off. My second favorite activity was probably tree climbing because it was basically just a tree that had hand and foot pegs in it and you had a harness on and I ended up climbing all the way to the top. I think Camp Rumbug was definitely my favorite camp because it was so outdoorsy and fun and exciting. - Tahlia

The mud rum was so fun, but there was a lot of hills, it was not that muddy but that was ok. Something really funny was that Evie Nibbs jumped into the mud and then started to roll around in the mud, Evie was really stinky after that. - Summer

On the first day we did lots of fun activities like the mud run and raft building. The mud run was really fun and all of us were covered in mud and there was lots of obstacles that we had to go through, like tunnels, climbing, balancing and climbing up a hill with a rope. I did the mud run 4 times but some people did more or less. When we did raft building there was a different instructor that helped us build the raft so it wouldn’t collapse and it worked. But it was really hot that day so we jumped in and swam. - Olivia

Our first activity was raft building which was on of my favourites. We learnt how to do a figure eight knot which was a bit challenging, then we moved onto our groups. My group were the winners. We won because we went up and back without our raft breaking! My second favorite activity was probably the zipline, it was a beautiful view, we would go across a really pretty lake and you would be able to race a friend across the river! Overall those were my favourite activities from Camp Rumbug.  - Raine
