Year 3 - Middle Unit

In Reading, our fabulous Year 3 students have been learning all about visualisation and how authors use different vocabulary and author’s craft to help readers create pictures in their mind. We have been visualising the settings, characters and events to better understand the texts Wylah: The Koorie Warrior and Nerra: Deep Time Traveller!

To help with this, we have made some special ‘visualising glasses’ that we wear everytime we practise our visualising during reading sessions. Reading in Year 3 has never looked so stylish!

In Writing, we have been learning about Historical Narratives. We have been listening to and looking at lots of examples, including a story about a cat that sailed on the Titanic (Titanicat), Wylah: Koorie Warrior book series and The Bunyip and the Stars.

Over the next week, we will be having a go at using writer’s craft to create our own historical narratives, using our knowledge gained during our Inquiry unit about the First Australians and what life was like in Australia 60,000 years ago.

In Numeracy, the Year 3 students have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We have been on ‘Shape Hunt’s' around the school to identify 2D and 3D shapes in the environment around us. We have also been experimenting with nets and got to make some cool 3D versions of famous Melbourne landmarks (such as the MCG).
