Physical Education
What an exhilarating beginning to the 2024 school year it has been in the Physical Education space with some events underway and many more to come during this term. We started the year off with our six-day intensive swimming program at Swim World, with the Year Four to Six students completing their six days this week, Year Two and Three students commencing in Week Four, and Prep and Year One students commencing in Week Six.
The Year Six students have begun participating in a weekly interschool sports competition. They will compete against other schools and improve their skills in basketball, cricket, softball, rounders, tennis and volleyball. Students in Year Four to Six have an exciting opportunity to trial for District Swimming in Week Five and the Waverley Central Tennis competition in Week Six. To conclude an extremely busy term, Tabloid Sports will be held in Week Seven and Eight to give students an opportunity to participate in a range of different events and earn points for their house!
Prep
Prep students began the year by learning how to be safe and respectful in Physical Education. Students have been developing their knowledge of PE expectations and are understanding how to move confidently and responsibly throughout the Physical Education learning space. As the term progresses, students will participate in a range of different activities that allow them to improve their ability to complete movement patterns. This will help our Prep students develop their spatial awareness, making sure they are mindful of their surroundings when moving within defined playing areas. By the end of the term students will be learning the correct technique to throw and catch a ball and will have multiple opportunities to practise and develop these new skills through throwing and catching tasks.

Year 3 and 4
During Term One, our Year Three and Four learners will be exploring three exciting units. They will begin by participating in a range of different minor games that will allow them to develop their teamwork and sportsmanship capabilities. Students will learn to work together to achieve success in a team environment. In the second part of the term, students in Year Three and Four will commence an exciting fitness testing program. They will collect their own fitness data, use it to set tailored goals, before self-evaluating their progress later in the year. This will be a fantastic opportunity for students to celebrate their personal growth and learn more about the importance of fitness in a safe environment. To conclude Term One, the focus will shift to netball. Students in Level Three and Four will hone their passing, pivoting and shooting skills while learning more about netball positions, structures and tactics. This unit will incorporate friendly matches and team play, where learners will apply and refine the skills they have developed earlier in the unit.

They will be given an opportunity to showcase their leadership, teamwork and sportsmanship skills which can be transferred to different aspects of their daily lives. As the term progresses, students will shift their focus to fitness testing. They will use their initial test results as a base to create individualised goals and conduct ongoing reflections to track their progress. Students will build their understanding of the importance of fitness through a program that encompasses self-improvement through self-evaluation. In the volleyball unit, students will develop their hand-eye coordination by learning how to set, dig, spike and serve using the correct techniques. Volleyball also provides a fantastic opportunity for students to build their agility while moving around the court. Improved hand-eye coordination and agility will set our Year Five and Six learners up for success in almost any sport they choose to participate in.
