News from the School of Entrepreneurs

From the SOE Head of School

Welcome to the 2024 Academic year! I wish to express a warm welcome to all students and their families who are returning to our community as well as those who have recently commenced. I would also like to welcome back all staff and acknowledge our newest members commencing this year.

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their adaptability and flexibility during online learning last week. All members of the community were extremely supportive and students embraced the online learning in a way that enabled them to continue to immerse themselves in all their subjects.

I would like to introduce you to the 2024 College goals that apply to the School of Entrepreneurs. Our explicit focus (amongst other areas of school life) for 2024 are:

The dedicated staff at St Luke's are highly motivated in their relentless pursuit of growth and achievement in our College goals this year. Fueled by a shared commitment to excellence in education, our educators embody a passion for fostering an environment that encourages both personal and academic development. Their motivation stems from the belief that a thriving educational institution is one where students are not only equipped with knowledge, but are also instilled with a love for learning. With a collective vision, the staff strives to implement innovative teaching methodologies, engage in professional development, and collaborate on initiatives that enhance the overall educational experience of our students. Their motivation lies not only in meeting targets but in surpassing them, driven by a genuine desire to empower students and contribute to the lasting success of our Catholic learning community. With that said, we all look forward to a year of growth and achievement stemming from the visible impacts of our strategic implementation.

With thanks and appreciation,

Ms Jacqui Genovese - Head of School, School of Entrepreneurs

A Message from the SOE Assistant Principal

Many thanks to our students who have been supporting the development of our 3 R’s (respect for self, respect for others and respect for environment) learning expectations process. This has been a part of our community for many years and our students in 2024 have embraced the spirit of these expectations so that we can work more effectively and successfully together.

As we all settle into this term after the long Christmas break, it can be challenging for young people to return to their routines. Sometimes, this is a period of change that means the ways of connecting and problem solving are no longer working as well as they used to. During these times, parents might discover that communicating with their children has become much more difficult and it might be helpful to review some of the ways that you engage your children in simple or complex conversations. I find sometimes the simple things are the most helpful and so I wanted to share an article titled, 5 secrets for communicating with your teenager. I find myself agreeing with these secrets, knowing that when I am more conscious of them, I am better at building trust and confidence with my own children. I hope that this refresher proves useful for you if ever you are in need of it.

Many thanks.

Mr Francis O’Callaghan - Assistant Principal, School of Entrepreneurs

International Women's Day Workshop and Breakfast for Year 11 and 12 Girls

We are excited to announce an upcoming event in celebration of International Women's Day on March 8th, and we would like to invite all Year 11 and 12 girls to participate in this meaningful occasion.

On International Women's Day, we aim to empower and inspire our young women to embrace their potential and celebrate the achievements of women worldwide. To commemorate this day, we have organised a special workshop and breakfast event exclusively for our Year 11 and 12 girls.

The details of the event are as follows:

Date: Friday, March 8th

Time: Breakfast commences at 7:30 AM, followed by the workshop starting at 9:00 AM

Location: Performing Arts Hall

The workshop will be facilitated by Nas Campanella, the National Disability Affairs Reporter for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Nas Campanella is an exceptional individual who has overcome personal challenges to become a prominent figure in journalism. She lost her sight at the age of six months but has since become the world's first blind newsreader to operate the studio herself while delivering live broadcasts.

Campanella is also a motivational speaker, addressing a wide range of topics such as inclusive education and adaptive technology. She is passionate about mentoring individuals with disabilities and mental health challenges, making her an ideal role model for our students.

We kindly request that all Year 11 and 12 girls attend either the breakfast or the workshop, or preferably both if possible however attending the workshop is compulsory. Please ensure that your daughter arrives at school on time as late arrivals will not be granted for this day. Students who arrive after recess will be marked as absent.

Furthermore, Year 11 and 12 girls are required to be present in full school uniform, and they may wish to wear a purple accessory to match the theme for International Women's Day.

We believe that this event will be a valuable opportunity for our students to learn from a remarkable individual like Nas Campanella and to celebrate the achievements of women around the world. Your support in encouraging your daughter to participate in this event is greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the International Women's Day Workshop and Breakfast, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mr Chris Bettiol

Music

In Music, Year 11 students are learning about musical concepts and starting off with elements of beat and rhythm. Students are using classroom instruments to develop their knowledge and understanding of complex drumming patterns and music theory. Participants will use this foundational knowledge to build their skillset as musicians.

11 Geography

Students in the very first St Luke’s senior Geography class have kicked off their studies with a practical orienteering scavenger hunt. Divided into teams of two, students were provided a crash course on compass bearing and navigation skills and then made their way from the marketplace to the oval, the farm, and all over the school collecting clues to a word puzzle. Taking a selfie at each stop along the way and utilising some amazing collaboration skills, the student dove head first into this challenge. While some students may have gotten a little lost in the activity, everyone had a lot of fun and dusted off their practical Geography skills after the holidays.

Visual Arts

Year 12 students are currently immersed in the development of their major works for Visual Arts. Students are exploring a variety of materials and techniques to represent their ideas!

Drama

On the 14th of February, our Year 12 Drama students made their annual visit to Onstage at Seymour Centre, where they witnessed both Individual and Group Projects from Drama students around the state. This allowed our students to see the standards of Band 6 projects in NSW and how their peers utilise the elements of Drama in a variety of project types. Our Drama students are excited to present their own HSC Group and Individual Projects to members of the St Luke's community later in the year in the lead up to their HSC practical examinations. They will be showcasing performance, set design, costume design, video drama and an applied research project.

TAS

The Preliminary Design and Technology class participated in an entry event where they had to build a bridge using butcher’s paper and masking tape. It had to hold a very heavy pencil case. Here are some of the creative ideas they came up with.
