Do you love a good movie? 'Good' being the operative word! Over the holiday break, I spent a lot of time with my family watching many movies. Now, as you know, not all movies are created equal! We started one film, and honestly, it was a little unsettling. We knew we had to turn it off. That experience reminded me of how important it is to guard what we let into our hearts and minds. The content we consume can shape our thoughts, attitudes, and actions.
In Proverbs 4:23, we are told, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” It is a powerful reminder that what we allow into our hearts, whether through movies, music or conversations, can influence who we are and how we behave. As adults our children too are watching what we choose to watch, listen to or engage with. If we fill our minds with negativity, disturbing content or things that draw us away from God, it will inevitably affect our outlook on life. But, when we surround ourselves with truth, love and wholesome messages, that is what will come out.
However, during the holidays, we also watched some amazing, faith-filled movies, now these are 'good'! Each of these films left us feeling inspired, hopeful and connected to God’s bigger story. I thought to include them here for some to fill their bucket with goodness:
The Forge (PG) – A beautiful story of perseverance, showing how a young boy and his community overcome adversity, relying on faith and hard work. Set against the backdrop of a struggling town, the boy faces numerous challenges, but his unwavering spirit inspires those around him. As they band together, the community discovers the power of unity and determination in the face of trials. The movie is a moving portrayal of how faith in God and collective effort can forge strength, hope, and renewal.
Miracles from Heaven (PG) – Based on a true story, this film depicts how a family’s faith is tested when their daughter becomes seriously ill, only to experience a miraculous healing. As they search for answers and struggle with their doubts, the family leans on their faith in God, even when the future seems uncertain. The mother’s relentless pursuit of healing for her daughter and her unwavering prayers form the emotional core of the story. Through a series of divine interventions, the family witnesses a miraculous recovery that restores their faith and brings hope to their lives.
I Can Only Imagine (PG) – This powerful biographical drama tells the story behind the writing of the hit song "I Can Only Imagine" by Bart Millard. It explores the difficult relationship between Bart and his abusive father, whose transformation later in life becomes a source of inspiration for the song. Themes of forgiveness, redemption, and healing are central as Bart grapples with the past and seeks God's grace. Ultimately, the film highlights the transformative power of God’s love to bring beauty from brokenness.
Breakthrough (PG) – In Breakthrough, the story follows a mother’s unshakable faith as her son, John, falls through the ice and is declared clinically dead for 45 minutes. Despite all odds, her constant prayers and belief in God lead to an incredible miracle as her son regains consciousness. The film portrays the struggles of faith in the face of a dire situation, and the impact of prayer on healing and recovery. It also highlights the role of community and the powerful ways God can work through those who believe in Him.
Courageous (M) – Courageous tells the story of four law enforcement officers who, after a personal tragedy, commit to becoming better fathers and leaders within their families. As they face everyday challenges and dangerous situations at work, they begin to realise the importance of living with integrity and honour in their roles as husbands and fathers. The film emphasises themes of responsibility, faith, and fatherhood, showing the officers’ journey toward becoming spiritual leaders in their homes. Through their struggles and victories, they grow closer to their families and to God.
Unsung Hero (PG) – Unsung Hero brings to light the quiet, often overlooked sacrifices made by those who support others in their achievements. Focusing on the loved ones and mentors behind great successes, this film emphasises the impact of their steadfast love and guidance. It reminds us that God works through the unsung heroes—those who may not receive recognition but are essential in helping others achieve greatness. The movie beautifully portrays how God’s grace is often displayed in the unnoticed, yet vital, actions of ordinary people.
The Shack (M) – In The Shack, a man named Mack spirals into despair after the tragic loss of his youngest daughter. His journey of healing takes an unexpected turn when he is invited to meet with God at a mysterious shack, where he grapples with questions of faith, suffering, and forgiveness. Through profound encounters with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Mack learns about grace, healing, and the mystery of God's presence even in the darkest moments. This emotionally intense film touches on deep themes of loss, hope, and the healing power of God’s love and wisdom.
Each of these films did not only entertain us but they strengthened my sense of faith and reminded me of God’s love and grace. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” What we choose to focus on, to allow into our hearts, can either conform us to the world or transform us into Christlikeness. We have a choice every day to feed our minds with what is pure, uplifting and Christ-centred.
Billy Graham once said, “The greatest waste in all of our earth, which cannot be recycled or reclaimed, is our waste of the time that God has given us each day.” Let us not waste the time God has blessed us with by filling our minds with negativity or harmful things. Instead, let us use that time to grow, to draw closer to God and to fill ourselves with His truth.
Let us commit to being intentional about what we watch, listen to and engage in. When we fill ourselves with positivity, hope and the Word of God, that is what will flow out, blessing others and honouring Jesus.
Shalom, shalom.
