Eyes on VET

Welcome to another edition of Eyes on VET!

I’ve now returned from 5 weeks in very hot weather in Croatia and London and have slowly adjusted to the cold here! I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Jenny Casserly, Mrs Cathy Coleman, Mrs Donna Payton and Mrs Ashleigh Fiori for all their efforts in holding the fort while I was on leave. They did a fantastic job, making it possible for me to enjoy a very relaxing holiday. 

While I was away, most students in the Year 10 Work Readiness program enjoyed selecting and applying for a variety of TAFE courses for 2027, as part of their VET Connect program. Since my return, I have been working with students to investigate external courses at private RTOs, as well as submit additional applications at TAFE… there is so much choice! It has been fantastic to see the range of interests that students have and very satisfying to assist them to find courses that match their interests and journey towards future career pathways. 

Just a reminder of the following closing dates for TAFE applications: 

SM TAFE - 21 August

NM TAFE – 31st August

Many of our Year 11 VET Connect students are wrapping up their external course this term and will be looking to pick up an extra day of Workplace Learning. They can either work an extra day with their current employer or take the opportunity to find another placement. Employer Workplace Details can be collected from the VET Office and need to be returned by the end of Week 7, to enable time for site checks and completion of required documentation.

Year 12 VET students are working towards completion of their Certificates both at school and externally and are completing the final parts of their Workplace Learning requirements. It’s hard to believe that Year 12 students will be finishing their schooling in 5 more weeks. ADWPL Logbooks and Skills Journals will be collected for final marking on Monday, 31st August (Week 7).

Spotlight on the 2027 MSC Traineeship Program

The MSC Group (Mediterranean Shipping Company and MEDLOG), have shared an exciting opportunity for Year 11 and Year 12 school leavers seeking to commence full-time employment in February 2027.

The 2027 MSC Traineeship Program offers 12-14 months of full-time, paid office-based training across various departments within MSC and MEDLOG, providing valuable exposure to the shipping, logistics, and transport industry. Participants will also complete a fully funded Certificate III in Business. Traineeship positions are available in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Fremantle.

Congratulations to Ellie Manason, who has been selected to represent WA for the U17 State team for Australian Youth Volleyball Championships from 20 to 25 September in Perth. 

Congratulations to Emily Long – Three-Time State Champion! 🏆🐶

A huge congratulations to our Year 12 VET Connect student Emily Long, who has achieved an outstanding milestone by winning the DogsWest Junior Handler State Final for the third consecutive year!

Emily has been involved in dog handling since getting her first dog and has developed a strong passion for exhibiting and working with dogs. She competes with her own English Springer Spaniel, Rio, as well as handling American Cocker Spaniels for a breeder. Her dedication involves regular training, private lessons and competing at dog shows most weekends - all while successfully balancing the demands of Year 12.

Emily's workplace learning at a dog grooming business has also supported her passion, giving her valuable grooming and presentation skills that she now uses when preparing her own show dog.

Her three consecutive State titles are a remarkable achievement, particularly as this was Emily's final year competing in Junior Handling. She will now represent Western Australia at the National Junior Handler Final in Victoria on 31 October 2026.

Emily says dog handling has taught her valuable life skills, including communication, resilience, sportsmanship, hard work and perseverance. She hopes her achievements inspire other students to pursue their passions and reminds us that success takes dedication, commitment and a willingness to keep learning.

Congratulations, Emily, on this outstanding achievement! We are incredibly proud of your dedication and success and wish you all the best at the National Final! 🏆🐾
