OLNA/NAPLAN

Year 9 OLNA, Term 4, Weeks 3 – 4, 2026

Some Year 9 students are scheduled to sit the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessments (OLNA) during Term 4, Monday, 26 October to Friday, 6 November 2026. 

Parents and carers should refer to their child’s OLNA Report to identify which component(s) – reading, writing, and/or numeracy – their child is required to sit. The OLNA Report shows a result for each of the three components: Reading, Writing, and Numeracy. 

Result                                      What it means

As the testing date draws nearer, the OLNA schedule will become visible on your child’s COMPASS timetable (scroll forward to find it). Please ensure that your child is aware of their individual test requirements, dates, times, and locations. 

The OLNA provides students with the opportunity to successfully demonstrate the minimum standards of literacy and numeracy required for the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) awards the WACE at the end of Year 12 to students who have met all the requirements.

The standard has three components – reading, writing and numeracy – and requires students to demonstrate proficiency, using a range of skills in each component. Students are given six opportunities (typically two per year) before the end of Year 12 to demonstrate the WACE Literacy and Numeracy requirement.  Once a student has demonstrated the required skills in a component, they are not required to sit that component again. The table below provides an overview of the components.

For students with disability, we have guidelines to help determine the appropriate adjustments for equal access. More information is available on the Authority’s website under Years 11 and 12 > Assessment > Equitable Access to Assessment Policy and Guidelines. 

If your child becomes unwell during the first week of testing, the Reading and Numeracy tests can be rescheduled to the second week of the testing window. However, the Writing test must be completed within the first two days of the testing window.

All students undertaking the OLNA are registered for the OLNA Support website, which offers a range of Skill Builders to help them prepare. All students will soon receive a welcome email from the OLNA Support website with their login details.

The website provides students with the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the test format and the skills required to successfully complete the OLNA; and the direct feedback model provides students with hints and explanations to every question. To give your child the best chance of success, we encourage them to work through the Skill Builders relevant to their areas of need. 

The amount of time your child spends preparing for the OLNA is flexible and self-determined. As a benchmark, we suggest completing one set of Skill Builders on the OLNA Support website a few times per week. This regular practice will help your child become familiar with the test format and the skills required to pass.

To access the OLNA Support website:

2. Then, click on the login button in the top right-hand corner:
3. Enter your username: (your student email address)
4. Password: (your first name)

5. Select the Skill Builder tab for the component of OLNA you need to complete. 

    

To further prepare students for the sorts of questions they can expect and familiarise them with the online assessment platform, access is provided to practice and example tests on a secure website.
