What's Happening In Primary

News and Information from Primary

Book Week

The annual Book Week Assembly at DCS was nothing short of spectacular, transforming Jiloa into a vibrant celebration of literature, creativity and community fun.

From the tiniest members of Jiloa Juniors to the confident voices of Primary and even a large number of Secondary students, the entire school came together in a dazzling display of costumes and character. Jiloa was a sea of colour, with students dressed as their favourite book characters.

What made the event truly special was the incredible effort put into the costumes. It was clear that families had spent time and care crafting outfits that brought stories to life. Many students stayed in character throughout their time on stage, adding another dimension to the assembly that had the audience laughing, clapping, and cheering.

This year’s Book Week Assembly was more than just a school event, it was a wonderful community celebration of imagination, storytelling and togetherness. The support from the DCS community was outstanding, with many helping behind the scenes and cheering from the audience.

2025 Schools Triathlon Challenge

The Schools Triathlon Challenge is being held in Devonport on Friday 21st November 2025 for students in Years 3-6. This event is a fantastic opportunity for students to try a new sport in a supportive environment. Participation is the foundation of this event and students are encouraged to be involved regardless of current fitness level, ability, previous experience or preferred sport.

Students can enter as an individual or as part of a team. If students are interested, they can enter both the individual and team race as they are held at different times in the schedule. There is an entry fee of $25 per student regardless of how many events a student is entered in.

Teams can be all male, all female or mixed, made up of either two or three students and can be made up of students from different year levels (but will be entered in the race of the oldest competitor). If your child would like to be in a team, please indicate on the entry form which leg of the race they would like to compete in, and I will try my best to put teams together. If your child has formed their own team with friends, please write each competitor’s name on the entry form in the leg of the race they will be completing, e.g. Swimmer – Tom Evans – Year 4.

Students need to return their entry form to the school office by 8.30am Friday 29th August if they wish to participate, using the entry form sent home with students (forms are also available from the school office).

Please note that the $25 payment is to be paid when the entry form is submitted (cash or EFTPOS please). This will be a school excursion for those interested and a permission note will be sent to students who enter via Consent2Go.

Participating students will need to provide their own gear for the triathlon, including bathers/wetsuit, sneakers, bike and helmet. It will also be the responsibility of families to transport bikes to and from the triathlon. More information will be given to students nearer to the event, or you can visit: www.schoolstriathlonchallenge.com.

What is your favourite line?

My favourite line is probably when I'm the main focus on the stage and I say "Good morning everybody!' in the second scene.

What has been the most challenging thing about this experience?

The most challenging part about being Peach the starfish is learning all the lines.

What has been the most fun thing about this experience?

The best part about having a main role is having so much fun with fitting costumes and learning lines together as a community.

Any other comments you would like to make?

I love being in the 'Fish tank gang' because of so many different reasons but one is because we are also back stage crew and we get to sing all of the songs!

I like that Gill is still keeps trying to bust the tank gang out of the aquarium. Even after many failed attempts Gill keeps trying.

My favourite line is "Hey kid." It's short but it tells a lot about Gill's personality and shows that Gill is a cool dude.

What has been the most challenging thing about this experience?

The most challenging part of this experience has been trying to juggle everything at school because I’m doing so many extra things.

What has been the most fun thing about this experience?

The most fun thing about this experience has been getting to know, and becoming friends with, people in different classes that I didn't think I would become friends with.
