Anti Racism Professional Learning

Preventing and Addressing Racism in Schools

On Monday afternoon, our staff participated in a staff led professional learning session about Anti Racism and cultural competency. We looked at an Anti-Racism framework, built staff capacity around having conversations with students about racism and promoted collective efficacy to build culturally competent classrooms and schooling environments. We explored concepts of interpersonal, internalised, institutional and systemic racism. We will be continuing our learning together as a staff on building cultural competence and thank our teacher led working group who have been leading our learning.

Northcote High School follows the Department of Education's policy on Preventing and Addressing Racism in Schools. We are building a culturally safe school with inclusive learning for everyone by working with staff, students, carers and communities. We will continue to:

  • Provide programs that teach about and celebrate diversity, inclusion and the impact of racism to build understanding and empathy
  • Use practices that support all students to thrive
  • Implement anti-racism efforts to prevent and address racism effectively
  • Make sure everyone feels safe, with clear and accessible pathways to report racism
