Year 3 News

From Lizzie, Year 3 teacher

Grade 3 Shrektacular!

Last Thursday was one of the most exciting days of the year - The Book Week Parade! It was so amazing to see so many incredible characters come to life. From Little Red Riding Hood to Sky Dragons; Astronauts to Anne of Green Gables; lions, tigers and snails; Harry Potter, princesses, Dog Men and more!

For the last couple of weeks we have been carefully constructing fractured fairy tales. We are really looking forward to sharing them with the Prep classes this week and our families on Friday. We have taken different elements of fairy tales and then added a twist.

For example, did you ever think that maybe the evil step mother wasn't so evil? Or that the Ugly duckling might have been rude and unkind? Or even that the gingerbread men, the three little pigs and Rapunzel could all exist in the same village? You will have to read it to believe it!

We also read the classic book of Shrek! by William Steig and learnt words such as...

Slogging = to work hard over a long period of time

Specialized = particularly knowledgeable at one thing

Peasant = a labourer of low social standing

Repulsive = something disgusting or distasteful

Frolicked = play or move in a cheerful way

Maths

In maths we have been working on solving worded problems. These can be extra tricky as they require close reading and carefully picking out the most important information.

See if you can solve the problems below:

Nick had 788 marbles for a science experiment. At the end of the day, he had 421 marbles left. How manymarbles did Nick lose?

Three buses took 125 students and teachers on an excursion. Each bus took a different amount of students (nobus had the same amount of students), how many students were on each bus. Find 3 different answers.

Lizzie is reading a book before bedtime. On Monday she reads 38 pages. On Tuesday she reads 44 pages.

How many pages does she read altogether on Monday and Tuesday? There are 123 pages in the book

altogether. How many pages does Lizzie have to read?

Assembly

We would also like to remind families our Year 3 cohort assembly will take place this Friday 29th August at 2:15pm in the school gym.

We would like to invite families to visit our Year 3 classrooms immediately following the assembly on Friday 29th August to view the students' fractured fairytales, which has been our writing focus for the past three weeks.

This will also provide parents the opportunity to view the Year 3 Book Week corridor display. We hope to see you there!
