Camp Experience

Reading

We have celebrated our love for books in every way possible! To honour our favourite titles and authors, we created quizzes, letters of appreciation, word searches, alternative endings and even mapped out our own adventures. The Book Week theme, Book an Adventure, saw students dress as their favourite characters from adventure-driven stories and the amount of effort was so impressive. Thank you to everyone who was able to come along to the parade and celebrate our love for reading. Let’s try to keep this energy alive as we move through the rest of the year.

Writing

We revisited narratives, making sure to take all the steps of the writing process: planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. Students were given a selection of titles and had to create their own story complete with a main character, problem and solution. Along the way they showed off their new skills with figurative language, weaving in similes, metaphors and personification to bring their writing to life.

Maths

We have continued to explore different strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. These have included the split strategy, tidy tens, part-part-whole knowledge, the bar model and number lines. We have also started applying these strategies to solve worded problems and it has been great to see students becoming more confident and flexible in their thinking.

Last but not least, our annual Year 2 Camp experience was an exciting two days for both teachers and students. The students were buzzing with energy as they took part in a mix of school-based camp activities and an excursion to Science Works. To give you a real sense of what camp felt like from a student’s point of view, Evelyn from 2D has shared her wonderful recount below.

First of all, on Wednesday all the grade twos had their first day of school camp for year two. We all stayed late at school and we got to make dinner and do fun activities. We did a fun classroom activity and we did brickworks then we got to prep the dinner. It was really fun. We made pizza and salad and garlic bread. It was so delicious and we played fun games outside and we ate some fruit too. Then we all got picked up, I went home and made garlic bread with my dinner at my house. It was really fun and my family thought it was super cool.

Day two of grade 2 camp. Second of all, we all went to science works the next day. It was amazing the best time I’ve ever been to science works. We did some general viewing. We went to see the lightning room and we saw the planetarium. It was so fun we got to go on a bus to get there. In the planetarium, we watched Tycho Goes to Mars. It was so cool to see. The seats went back like a bed because the movie was on the roof. Then we went back on the bus to get back to school.

Thanks to all who got involved in our learning experiences over the last fortnight. Without your help we could not make it all happen. Special shout out to Evelyn for her contribution to this fortnight's edition! We love to see student's get involved. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for next time!
