From Nick, Senior School Science teacher

Grade 3

We are exploring motion and forces. They have been learning how different forces affect how objects move, and applying their understanding by designing solar-powered fan cars in Makers Empire. Students are experimenting with how energy, friction, and push/pull forces influence their car’s speed and movement, building both problem-solving and creative design skills.

Grade 4

Grade 4 scientists  have been investigating insulation and heat transfer. Students designed and tested their own insulators to see how long an ice cube could last, exploring materials that slow down heat flow.

Grade 5

In Grade 5, students are exploring light and optics through pinhole cameras. They are learning how light travels, how images are formed, and the science behind cameras. Students are designing, building, and testing their own pinhole cameras, developing skills in precision, observation, and scientific recording.

Grade 6

Grade 6 students are beginning the first steps of designing their electrical products and gadgets. They are considering how circuits work, selecting components like wires, motors, switches, and lights, and sketching their ideas. This unit is building their understanding of electricity, energy flow, and product design as they prepare to create functional prototypes.
