On Saturday the 25th of April, we got up very early to attend the Ringwood Cenotaph Dawn Service.
The dawn service commemorates those who have served and not returned, as well as those who are currently serving on missions of war and peacekeeping.
Before the official service began, the band played songs of remembrance. We then heard from the Catafalque Party Commander. The Commander is a designated member of the Australian Defence Force who leads the party, giving the necessary orders to “mount” (take up position) at the start of the service and “dismount” (depart) at the end. He moved the cadets into their positions at the four points of the cenotaph.
We then heard a number of guests speak about why ANZAC Day is important, the difference between ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day, and we heard prayers for the fallen and their families.
We laid a wreath at the base of the cenotaph before the Last Post was performed and the Ode was recited.
We then had a minute’s silence, and a final prayer for peace was read.
Attending this service was a special experience. It was our first one, and we both found it very interesting.

ANZAC day is important in my family because people in my family went to war. My dad served in the army as well. I have attended the dawn service every year since I turned 2.

My uncle is a military police office. He went to Darwin to train. He is special to me because he fights to protect us.

My dad serves in the army and is a lance corporal. He's be serving for 25 years. He has been to many places. ANZAC day is a way to remember those who have fought in wars for our country. I went into the city to see my dad in the parade.
- Xavier R
ANZAC Day is a day to remember those we have lost in the wars, and to thank them for their service. People commemorate it by going to the dawn service and placing a wreath down.

I like to watch to the ANZAC Day footy match between Essendon and Collingwood. At the beginning of the match, they play the bugle and and observe a minute silence for the fallen soldiers.
