Diocesan Assembly

A couple of weeks ago myself and some of our staff attended the Diocesan Assembly at Federation University, Churchill. If you don’t know what a Diocesan Assembly is, it was a coming together of over 200 representatives from across the Diocese of Sale – stretching from Narre Warren to Orbost, to discuss how we move forward as a Church in community, recognising the changing demographics and cultural influences of our secular society.

It was one of the most inspiring events I have ever been to. A genuine coming together of ages, experiences and stances exploring what being a Catholic looks like today and what it could look like in the future.

There was a lot of discussion about Parish-School partnerships and how we can work together to support the faith life of our College community. Having a family myself, I understand the challenges of weekend sport, birthday parties, part-time jobs and actually having time to be present with our families. Life is busy. School life is busy. So, we discussed working on some genuine, realistic and inclusive resolutions to invigorate our Diocese, not just focusing on Sunday Mass attendance.

The future will definitely not look the same as the past and I don’t think we should be scared about this; I think we should take on the challenge of being the Church of 2025 and beyond.

In the prayer of Bishop Greg:

Holy Spirit of Wind and Fire, come!

Holy Spirit of Wind and Fire, come! Blow fresh life through our tired dreams.

Holy Spirit of wind and fire, come! Reveal more clearly a vision of what is possible.

Holy Spirit of Wind and Fire, come! Startle us anew with your power and energy!

Holy Spirit of Wind and Fire, come! May we build a Church that radiates and nourishes our unity of faith.

Holy Spirit of Wind and Fire, come! May we develop the courage to be people of mission, alert to new opportunities, always on the move!

Holy Spirit of Wind and Fire, come! May we develop the courage to be people of mission, alert to new opportunities, always on the move!
