Student Learning & Growth

My introduction into the Marist-Sion College community has been an incredibly positive and enriching experience as I begin to become familiar with my new surroundings. I have been welcomed whole-heartedly by staff and students alike which has nurtured my sense of belonging and reaffirmed my move to West Gippsland. I feel privileged and honoured to be a part of such a thriving and dynamic school where the key focus is to develop the young people around us into successful global citizens.
Celebrating Our Community
Already this term, I have been a part of significant events, including induction for staff before the students returned, the High Achievers Assembly where we celebrated past successes and the Year 12 Commencement Evening for students and families where we explored what this year and beyond may hold, not forgetting of course the Year 7 Welcome Evening and the Swimming Carnival. All of these events have been joyful and inspiring, reinforcing the strong sense of community that defines Marist-Sion College.
Positive Classroom Climate & Learning Routines
Additionally, this term, I have been struck by the effectiveness of our positive classroom climate routines, setting the tone for success and maximising instructional time. These routines serve as key strategies to enhance student engagement, behaviour education and learning outcomes. With the routines displayed consistently on TV screens around the school, staff and students alike are reminded of our purposeful intent in supporting our classroom environment.
Research underscores the significance of a well-structured classroom routine. Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction (2012) shows that students benefit from structured lesson introductions and closure, as these provide clarity and support cognitive load management. Chris Thomas’ ‘Teach Like a Champion’ (2010) also highlights the power of entry and exit routines in reinforcing expectations, reducing wasted time and creating a culture of consistency.
Encouraging a Love of Reading – SURF Program
A key feature of our Classroom Routines is our SURF program (Silent Uninterrupted Reading for Fun) where students in Years 7, 8 and 9 read for 15 minutes at the start of every Lesson 5, after lunch. Regular reading offers numerous benefits, including improved academic performance through enhanced vocabulary and comprehension skills, cognitive and literacy development, and social-emotional benefits that promote relaxation and enjoyment. We encourage families to engage with our junior students about their reading, helping them discover books that spark their interest and curiosity.
Preparing for NAPLAN
Finally, I’d like to remind all families about the upcoming NAPLAN tests which provide essential insights into your child’s growth in learning. This information is used to tailor our teaching programs that best suit your child’s educational needs as well as identify areas for improvement within our school. I encourage you to support your child in preparing for NAPLAN so that they may approach the tests with confidence by reinforcing the importance of doing their best and ensuring that their device is fully charged the night before.
Wishing you all a fruitful and successful 2025.
