Religious Education and Inquiry
This term we will be beginning a new inquiry in which students will explore the interconnectedness of living things and the environment, focusing on how human actions can impact them. Throughout the term we will be conducting a number of investigations, experiments, and discussions. This unit has a focus on developing an understanding of biological concepts such as life cycles, ecosystems, and the distinction between living and non-living things. They will also learn about Earth's rotation, surface changes, and how human activities contribute to environmental changes.
In Religious Education we are continuing our learning about prayer and expanding our knowledge of Eucharist. Through this unit we will be deepening our understanding of Eucharist and our connection to the community to prepare our Year 4 students to receive this sacrament next term.
Literac
This term we have begun implementing the Science of Reading, which has seen our Reading and Writing lessons integrated. We are focusing on honing reading, writing, and comprehension skills through engaging activities and immersive storytelling. We are exploring various genres of literature, from thrilling adventures to mysteries, and embark on journeys through scientific change. We'll be delving deep into grammar and punctuation, learning how to craft sentences and paragraphs that captivate. Through interactive lessons, we'll develop effective communication, co-operative and collaboration skills.
Mathematics
This term we have begun our numeracy units with a focus on time. Student’s will work to recognise and use the relationship between formal units of time, including days, hours, minutes and seconds, to estimate and compare the duration of events. We will begin to explore counting by multiples of quarters, halves and thirds, including mixed numerals; locate and represent these fractions as numbers on number lines. The term will progress with a unit of work focusing on fractions, and further along multiplication and division.
Physical Education:
In Term 2, 3/4s will be continuing to develop a wide variety of motor skills in soccer, netball, and football. 3 / 4 students are in the associative stage of learning in these sports, as they will continue to refine and practise different skills required. Students will be taught the simple rules of these sports, as well as the correct movements that will allow them to develop specific skills and enjoyment of the sport. This will be in conjunction to their next Gala Day later in June. In week 5 students will be completing motor skill testing as well as the beep test.
STEM
In Term 2, students will learn about and delve into the study of the living world, biology. They will discuss and justify opinions on how animals are classified and then will learn about different animal sub-classifications, identifying that animals can be classified depending on their physical attributes. Students will then identify the different habitats and ecosystems and the way different animals interact to produce a food web. They will then design and create an animal that can exist within a specific habitat, identifying their key characteristics, habitat, place in the food web, and animal sub-classification.
Mandarin
Year Three and Four students will respond to and receive information including ‘how are you? I’m very well, thank you!’, ‘what’s your name? My name is—‘, and ‘how old are you? I’am –old of age’ in Mandarin. They are going to practice good manners and follow class instructions in Mandarin as well. They will learn how to read and write Chinese numbers from one to thirty one and, be aware that Chinese characters are formed by strokes and the use of tone marks in Pinyin. They will match characters to the meanings and sounds of familiar words including numbers, months of the year and days of the week.
Assemblies
Monday morning assemblies are at 8.50am. Class assemblies will continue to be held at 9am on Friday mornings.
Homework Expectations
This term we will continue implementing homework tasks. Students will be given a literacy and mathematics task to complete. We advise students to complete approximately 20 minutes of homework each night. Student’s will go through their homework and the requirements on Thursday in class. They will take their homework books home with the required instructions on Friday, to be completed over the weekend and the course of the week. Homework is then due back Thursdays. Students will all have access to the instructions via Google Classroom, as well as the printed copy which will be pasted into their homework books.
