Term 1 Science with Mrs Sifa

Science Term 1

Rooms 10 and 11

This term, by building Rube Goldberg machines, students in Rooms 10 and 11 have been busy demonstrating our learning about how energy is transferred and transformed – but not used up. Original plans were built, tested and adjusted many times. Students showed resilience, creativity and perseverance as they kept trying, no matter the outcome. They have learned to make, test and write up electrical circuits with standard symbols.

Rooms 3 and 4

This term we investigated how materials can change appearance but still remain the same. We used paper in a variety of ways: bending, shaping, pulping and finishing up by testing how much weight can be supported by a single sheet of paper and how many students can stand on balloons!

Rooms 6 and 7

We have been learning how to think like scientists hypothesizing (predicting) and testing our ideas. We have explored the links between, and different roles of, producers, consumers and decomposers. Students have grown Vietnamese mint, sweetcorn, cress, broad beans, nasturtiums and succulents from seeds, cuttings and divisions. Many students have taken home their plants to grow in their gardens.

We used the internet to watch a live stream of a pair of bald eagles sitting on a clutch of three eggs followed up by online research into the characteristics and life cycles of this particular species. Sadly, none of the eggs hatched.
