Finalising AERO Study and 2024-2025 Journey
As we begin Term 4, our staff are entering a reflective phase of the year, consolidating student learning and preparing to gather the key pieces of assessment data that help us understand each child’s progress. While Term 4 brings a formal cycle of data collection, it is important to note that assessment at our school is not confined to a single moment in time. Teachers use a wide range of ongoing strategies throughout the year, such as one-on-one conferences, quick checks for understanding (e.g., using mini whiteboards or gestures to signal responses), pre- and post-assessments and progress monitoring tools to continually inform and adjust their teaching. This ensures that every learner’s growth is recognised and supported, not just measured at the end of a term or year.
Our teachers have worked diligently to deepen their understanding of how students learn best. Over the past two years, our participation in the AERO study has strengthened our collective capacity to apply evidence-based practices in the classroom. This partnership has helped refine our approach to teaching and learning, providing valuable insights into how effective instruction and high-quality feedback can improve student outcomes.
One of the most significant developments has been our continued work in early literacy. The introduction of the Little Learners Love Literacy program from Foundation to Year 2 has provided a strong, structured approach to teaching reading through synthetic phonics. This program, combined with targeted professional learning, has ensured that our teachers are confident in delivering lessons that are explicit, systematic and responsive to student needs.
In addition to formal learning opportunities, teachers are engaging in coaching sessions and peer observations that promote shared reflection and collaboration. These experiences allow staff to learn from one another, celebrate successes and refine their approaches using strong, research-informed methods. The culture of professional learning within our school continues to grow, and it is inspiring to see how educators support one another in striving for excellence.
We are also seeing encouraging trends in both our internal (e.g., DIBELS) and external data (e.g., NAPLAN), reflecting the positive impact of this sustained and intentional work. More importantly, we are seeing students demonstrate growing confidence, engagement and pride in their learning. Learning spaces are increasingly filled with students who are eager to participate, take risks in their learning and celebrate their progress.
As we move through Term 4, our focus remains on supporting every student to finish the year positively and successfully. Families play an important role in this journey by encouraging curiosity, celebrating effort and sharing in their child’s learning experiences at home. Together, we continue to build a strong learning community that values growth, evidence and connection.
