Year 6 Excursion

On Tuesday the 14th of October, Our class 6NB , visited the Melbourne Museum for an excursion to learn about traffic and road safety. At around 9:20 - 9:30 we went on the bus and drove 30 mins to the Melbourne Museum. As we got there we were met with a big building . On the left was the museum and the right was the Royal Exhibition Building. It was truly fascinating. We then ate our snacks at around 10 and had a long break , Longer than our usual breaks.

Road To Zero

After that , most of us were tired so we headed in and went down the escalator. We then waited for about a few minutes , and were greeted by 4 staff members to talk about road safety. And then took us to a room to kind of warm us up about road safety. They then gave us this sheet with a clipboard to use and connect, they also gave us a lanyard. They then dismissed us to go to the Road To Zero activity room. And had to use our lanyard to complete the activities on the clipboard they gave us. We chose our activities and learned some interesting things like , What is your body built to survive a bike crash or a motorcycle crash etc. We also did VR and we also met Graham , a scientifically accurate human to survive a deadly car crash with features that modern humans never evolved to have because cars appeared only 100 years ago. The activities were actually quite fun and we learned a lot about road safety. Now after a long session it was lunch time and we ate for a long time and played for a little.

Advertisement Editing

After lunch we went to the second room and there were comfy cushions and listened to the staff on how we were going to make an advertisement. After the staff taught us we went to our areas and started doing the ads. Even though we had some arguments on this or that we found a solution. And eventually finished well. The staff came to us and watched our ad and said it was really good. . We also got the chance to view other groups' ads. And some were pretty good. After we were done the staff talked to us one final time and said they're going to send it to us afterwards some time. It was the end of the day and we went back on the bus going back to school.

Safe Journeys Program

On the 16th of October 2025, two of the Grade 6 classes left Good Shepherd on an excursion to the Melbourne Museum to take part in the Safe Journeys Program.

After the bus ride to the museum, we regrouped into our two classes to begin two separate activities. 6MP started off by constructing an advertisement, while 6NB began with the virtual reality experience.

When we got to making the advertisement, our instructor told us that the Safe Journeys Program’s goal was to reduce the road death toll to zero. Then we went off in groups of four or five into pods. We had to use snippets of pre-made film to construct our advertisement. It had to be only one minute long. After we finished, we got to go around and look at what the other groups had made. Everyone did a great job.

For our final activity, we got to do VR, but before that we had to sort out some cards into four sections: safe roads, safe people, safe vehicles, and safe speeds. Next, we got into our groups and wandered around an endless display of touchscreen boards. We were given a number to indicate our position in line for the VR experience.

The VR was so cool! We got to sit in many different cars, each showing a different point of view. When we were in the future, it told us that the Safe Journeys Program wants to aim for zero deaths on the road. Afterwards, we looked at what a person would need to look like to survive any crash. The result was really, really ugly. You probably wouldn’t even fit in a car! We also looked at an elevator crash, then did a test about road rules.

Sadly, we then had to hop back on the bus and head back to Good Shepherd.

The day was really good and we learned how to be safer on the road when we go to high school. We gained valuable experience and had a blast!

6MP

Class 6EL had an unforgettable excursion to the Melbourne Museum’s Road to Zero exhibition, where we learned all about road safety in fun, interactive ways.

When we arrived, we met our hosts, Chris and Chris, who introduced us to the idea of Safe People, Safe Roads, Safe Speeds, and Safe Vehicles through a hands-on game. We then explored the interactive zone, where we built safe cars, met “Graham” — a model designed to survive any crash — and even tried a virtual reality drive from 1970 to 2055!

After lunch, we worked in groups to create persuasive road safety advertisements using touch-table technology, combining sound, visuals, and facts.

It was an incredible day full of learning, teamwork, and fun — one we’ll remember for a long time!
