A Legacy of Love -
What will be remembered when...
Tim Argall, Executive Principal
… we’ve moved on to our next thing?
… our Prep students are experiencing their last day of Year 12?
… the students in Year 12 at DCC have their own children in Year 12 at DCC?
… it’s the year 2050?
What will be remembered if …
… we get together at church in a year’s time?
… we bump into each other at the shops in 2030?
… we accidentally meet up outside a theatre in another city?
… one of our children marries one of yours?
Each of our life stories, unique though they are, are tied together and dependent on one another.
We are all part of a community called Donvale Christian College.
We are the grateful recipients of 50 years of continued education, centred on Scripture, made possible because of God’s revelation of himself to us.
We are believers together, knowing Jesus as Lord.
We have all experienced relationship as a member of this school community.
What will we remember?
Let’s talk about love.
If I look at the honour boards that are mounted on the wall of Building A, just down from Reception, I see the names of students who fell in love with each other!
There are many families who acknowledge the first flickers of love in the parents occurring in the yard (maybe even the classroom) at DCC!
But we know love is not just that.
Let’s talk about the small things.
(Next week we’ll pick up some bigger things.)
A warm greeting.
A selfless handing over of a resource – a sharing of a personal blessing with another.
A kind word to the sad and lonely.
A pat on the back – a form of encouragement to the hard worker.
A good word on behalf of another, even when they are not present.
Getting up half an hour earlier to bake some treats for recess, for classmates or work colleagues.
Sharing the drop-off or pick up load with another family in your child’s class.
Saying no to gossip.
Saying yes to lingering a bit longer to chat to a friend who needs a listening ear.
From little things, big things grow.
Glimpses are needed before vision is formed.
We, as a community, live in the now and not yet of God’s kingdom come.
Our love – intentional and focused on building one another up – can be that little glimpse of heaven, of the world to come, that our classmate, our colleague, our friend needs. Whether we are comfortable with it or not, we carry that responsibility on behalf of each other.
As we contemplate what will be remembered in a few days, a few years or a few decades, let’s be mindful of the small acts of love we are responsible for every day.
Shalom.
