Topics 7 & 8

Topic 7 focuses on Gender and Identity within the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships curriculum. It aims to teach students to challenge stereotypes, critique the influence of gender norms on attitudes, and understand key issues related to human rights and gender identity. The topic promotes respect for diversity and difference, and helps students develop skills for respectful relationships, confidence, and resilience. 

 

Key aspects of Topic 7:

  • Focus: Gender and Identity. 
  • Learning Objectives:
    • Challenge stereotypes and critique the influence of gender norms. 
    • Understand human rights and gender identity. 
    • Develop respect for diversity and difference. 
    • Build skills for healthy, respectful relationships. 
    • Promote gender equality. 
    • Strengthen understanding of consent. 
    • Address issues like hate speech and navigate the online world safely. 
  • Purpose:

    To equip students with social, emotional, and positive relationship skills to improve their health and wellbeing and reduce antisocial behaviours, including gender-related violence. 

  • Context:

    It is one of the eight topics within the broader Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships learning materials for primary and secondary students in Victoria. 

 

Topic 8, Positive Gender Relations, focuses on building an understanding of gender-based violence, promoting respectful relationships, and developing skills to prevent violence and foster positive social and emotional learning for primary and secondary students.

  • Focus: Positive Gender Relations 
  • Learning Objectives:
    • Understanding Gender-Based Violence:

      Students learn about the impacts of gender-based violence and explore gender norms and stereotypes. 

    • Promoting Respectful Relationships:

      The topic emphasizes the standards of respectful relationships, including mutual respect, trust, honesty, and communication. 

    • Developing Skills:

      Learning activities help students develop skills for problem-solving, setting boundaries within relationships, and seeking help. 

    • Prevention of Violence:

      Students play an active role in preventing gender-based violence by learning peer support and help-seeking skills. 

    • Online Safety:

      The curriculum addresses safely navigating online environments and understanding consent

       

  • Purpose:

    To develops students' understanding of gender-based violence and promotes active participation in its prevention. Promote Respectful Relationships which teaches students the standards of respectful relationships and how to build and maintain them. 

    Equip students with skills in problem-solving, setting boundaries, peer support, and seeking help. Explore healthier forms of masculinity and strengthens students' understanding of consent. Provide skills to safely navigate the complexities of the online world. 

     

  • Context:

    Topic 8 is one of eight topics in the RRRR curriculum, covering Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) across primary and secondary levels. The updated curriculum is designed to be inclusive of all students, including those of diverse genders, sexualities, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds. 

     

How it Integrates with the RRRR Program:

These materials are a core component of the Victorian Curriculum, specifically supporting the Health and Physical Education curriculum.  The RRRR initiative is a whole-school approach that supports a comprehensive social and emotional learning program.
