St John's Ambulance First Aid

On Friday, the whole school participated in a first aid course run by St John's Ambulance!

The F/1/2 students read through a storybook, and saw how Johnny Bear identified an emergency. They put the Danger, Response and Send for Help strategy into action and helped call 000 in an informative session. Students learned the first aid chant to help them remember what to do in an emergency.

The 3/4 students revised ‘DRS’ which involves assessing for dangers, obtaining a response and calling Triple Zero. The main focus of this module was learning how to check the airway and breathing and how to place a patient into the recovery position. They then applied the knowledge they had learnt through an interactive game based on the DRSAB action plan.

The 5/6 students revised DRSAB and learned the practical CPR component. They went through how to perform CPR and when it is required in a First Aid situation. They then also participated in group problem-solving scenarios based on a variety of first aid situations allowing them to apply their knowledge.

Students received a certificate for passing the course they did today! There were also some helpful sheets sent home to record personal information that is needed when there is an emergency! This is important to have on the fridge or somewhere easy to locate!

There is a great free app that is called 'First Aid Action Hero' Students can play this game to put their first aid skills to the test.
