Class Placement 2025

Early next term staff will begin formulating classes for next year.  The process to construct classes is complex and will take most of Term 4. Next week your child will bring home a 2025 placement form. We kindly ask that every child returns this form as soon as possible to assist us with our placement process.

The decisions about the organisation of classes within the school, including the year levels in each class, the location of classes, and the teacher/s and students within these classes are made by teachers, the Leadership Team and the Personnel Advisory Committee (PAC) of the school. The PAC consists of the Principal, a staff representative, and an Australian Education Union (AEU) Rep elected by AEU members in the school and an SSO rep elected by staff.

When placing students in classes, the school will consider a range of information in order to form educationally and socially balanced classes. Classes will be formed to best meet the needs of the students within the constraints of the resources provided. Class structure, class compositions and the allocation of students to classes are all developed through consultation with teaching staff and the Leadership Team. We consider parent information carefully, however, sometimes the parent requests can be conflicting (to another family's request and from the professional opinions of the teacher) and may result in your request being unable to be accommodated. Teachers are not generally assigned to a class until after the class placement process. Teachers focus on class balances to ensure a successful year for all students.

Please remember that staffing is dependent upon the enrolment in each grade. The class distribution is considered on the basis of student numbers. The distribution of classes may change each year according to enrolments in the school and the numbers in each class or year group. This information determines the creation of composite (multi-year level) classes, as opposed to straight-year levels. In any classroom setting, there is a diverse range of abilities that the teacher is required to differentiate. Parent/caregivers need to trust the professional judgement of teachers who are placing their child.

In deciding where each child will be placed, we take into account the following criteria:

  • Teacher knowledge of learning needs, group dynamics and supportive and unsupportive friendships
  • Enrolment numbers
  • Gender balance
  • Previous placements

Please advise if your child will not be attending Modbury School P-6 next year or plan to enrol a new student, please contact us as soon as possible.
