Year 1

Growing and Learning in Year 1!

We have had a fantastic start to this term with all of our students making a positive start to the second half of Year 1! They have all demonstrated a higher level of maturity and are displaying skills of being more focussed for longer and have increased the quality and quantity of their work!

During English this term we have made a focus on the parts of a Narrative - Characters, Setting and Plot (Orientation), the Complication/Problem and Resolution/Solution. We have read some good stories to help us identify these parts including The Very Cranky Bear, The Gruffalo and The Everywhere Bear as well as reviewing the books we’ve already read this year. We have been inspired to write about a teddy monkey that gets into a problem at school and the students have been creating and writing about some very interesting problems for their characters to solve.

Throughout the Core Literacy sessions each day, the students have demonstrated a good understanding of the sounds we have been focussing on and are building their confidence to blend and segment words to decode them. Their fluency is also improving steadily through daily practice with books and short passages from books. Students have also enjoyed building their Tricky Word knowledge through active games.

In Maths, we have been building our skills and knowledge around Measurement, Knowing Numbers and Place value and are now moving into Partitioning. During our measurement unit, we have focussed on the capacity of containers and ordering them to see which holds the most and which holds the least. We have also explored Mass and used both hefting and balance scales to test objects to see which is heavier or lighter. During our Knowing Numbers unit, the students worked through identifying the place value of numbers into the hundreds and how to read, say, make and explain what the numbers were.

Our Inquiry focus for this term has been on Healthy Bodies and how the food we eat affects us. We have begun exploring healthy foods and drinks versus unhealthy foods and drinks as well as beginning to understand where our food comes from before it arrives at the supermarket or shop.

During sport we have had a fun Olympic competition where the students completed individual events like scooter hockey, running and giant soccer! Students were awarded amazing medals made by Mr Scanlon!

We are really proud of the students and all the efforts they have made so far this term.~Damian Hayes, Jess Wallace, Nicole Williams, Geetika Kohli and Claire Felato.
