Student-led Initiatives!

Toilet Private Investigators (TPIs) and Nature Club's Litter Legends

Toilet Private Investigators (TPIs)

We are all sending a massive shout out to the TPIs: Emmy, Lowri, Etta, Kiki, Mathilde and Byron for showing such leadership, initiative, and drive to tackle the huge behavioural issues in the toilets!

Kiki – "It feels good being in the TPI because we can solve this huge problem.

This group of grade 3/4 students came up with an idea to quickly respond to the issues of vandalism in the toilets, including purposely blocking the toilets. These behaviours have been impacting on all students, and the 3/4s want to put a stop to it.

During specialist inquiry time, each 3/4 class is focussing on a different issue that was identified at the start of the year by the students as an area that needs improving in our school grounds: litter, toilets, and nature (wanting more nature for wellbeing and for biodiversity). Whilst all of the 3/4 classes are still developing their actions, the TPI has been fast tracked.

Next week, the TPIs will train up toilet monitors from each class to help them with their mission and they will liaise with Luke who is very impressed with their work.

Nature Club's Litter Legends

In specialist inquiry, the 1/2s are focusing on making our school a better place for more creatures. Just like the 3/4s, the 1/2s identified that litter is an issue at our school that is affecting our environment, other creatures, and the appearance of our school (which also affects our wellbeing). So last term, a group of 1/2s started up "Nature Club", picking up litter during recess on Fridays. This term, some 3/4s and I have joined their efforts. We'll be collecting litter each week and reporting back to the school. This week we collected 335grams of litter in just 15 minutes. Here's what some of the Litter Legends said:

  • Layla: “Out of all of them, the landfill is the most – and we found metal things too, and we even found a sign for the carpark and old ear phones
  • Ada: “There is too much rubbish and there is too much paper”
  • June: “I think people should stop when they have wrappers I think they should stop putting the rubbish on the ground. I think they should put it in the bin”
  • Azra: The thing we have most of is plastics, which goes in landfill”
  • Ramona: “The thing I notice is that most of the paper that we found was toilet paper and tissues, which can’t be recycled”
