Curriculum Matters
Foundation
Foundation students have made a great start to Term 3!
We are loving being back with our friends, having our specialist classes and learning new things.
Level 1
The Level 1 students have made a great start to Term 3.
We were very excited about having a visit to our classroom from Michael Ymer on Tuesday 23 July. We did two activities with him one called “Get out of my house” and the other “Shoe detectives.” The students were highly engaged in both activities and learnt a lot.
Michael taught the teachers and students about managing maths materials, organising classroom layout, engaging reluctant learners and offering success at different levels.
Level 2
In Level 2, we have been working hard to uplevel our review writing skills.
We have reviewed a range of texts and film, and even plan on doing some food reviews next week- YUM!
This week, we have worked hard to create a ‘Bookworm Review’ about ‘The Rainbow Fish’ by Marcus Pfister.
Level 3
Level 3 has had an exciting start back to Semester 2!
We began our Potato Olympics and the students have excelled at making real life connections with their mathematics skills.
The students have applied their knowledge of length, angles, estimation, arrays and shape thus far. We can’t wait to see the athletes continue their Olympic journey!
We have been able to incorporate the Olympics into their writing, where students have written amazing information reports about the history of the Olympics, and a chosen athlete or event.
Keep up the great work Level 3!
Level 4
Future Innovators
Level 4 students are learning what it takes to be a ‘Future Innovator,’ students have delved into the fascinating world of problem-solving and creativity. They are learning that inventions often arise from the identification of a problem, sparking the innovative process. Students are discovering that persistence and a passion for solving issues are crucial in bringing new ideas to life. By understanding the journey from problem identification to solution creation, they are gaining valuable insights into how inventions shape our world.
‘Frank Green was officially born in 2013... but the idea for it has been around since the 90s. Our founder, Benjamin Young.’ By Alexandra
‘Ruth Handler invented Barbie in March 1959.’ By Sophia
‘The claw clip was designed by Christian Potut, in 1986.’ By Mila
Level 5
In Level 5, the students have settled in admirably into Term 3. We have been busily learning all about animal adaptations by looking at their structural features and the way they behave that help them to survive in the wild.
In Reading, we have been viewing lots of non-fiction texts focusing on annotating, summarising, scanning, monitoring and skimming for information.
In Writing, the students have been developing their research and planning skills on specific animals or a topic of interest. They will now begin to write their information reports.
In Mathematics, the students have been learning all about strategies to solve problems involving adding and subtracting fractions. They have also been converting between 12hr & 24hr time and exploring outcomes of chance experiments involving equally likely outcomes and representing probabilities of those outcomes using fractions.
In Inquiry, the students have continued to explore animal adaptations and even created wonderful posters on human evolution!
5W had the privilege of experiencing a rich maths activity with Michael Ymer (Mathematics consultant) where they created a valid survey of interest, explored fractions, decimals and percentages, created a strip graph which turned into a pie graph and learnt so much more!
Level 6
Snow Day
❄️Mt Buller Snow Trip ☃️
On the 19 of July, 50 Level Six students headed off to the snow for a one-day trip.
We had to get to school at 5:20 in the morning so we wouldn't be late. At 6:00 we started the trek up to Mount Buller, the drive would take 3 and a half hours with a toilet stop in Yea. Our bus driver Cam was hilarious and he kindly put on a movie for us.
When we arrived, we hired all our gear at the village at Mt Buller and made our ascent towards the ski school. We were split into different groups depending on our ability.
At the school, we learned how to clip into our skis and snow-plow. Once everyone felt confident, the beginner groups headed to the magic carpet.
Meanwhile, the intermediate group headed down to the chair lift at the bottom of the mountain. After doing the slopes for a while we headed to ABOM for a warm lunch.
The options were butter chicken, curry, pasta, pies, pizza, and hotdogs. We also got to choose a side, some being chips and rice.
After lunch, we went to the slopes for free play on Bourke Street. Some people went on the chair lifts while others stayed near the magic carpet. Unfortunately, since the visibility wasn't great, we weren't able to go down other runs but we all had heaps of fun at Bourke Street.
Once our free time had ended, we made our way back to the village and returned our gear. After that, we got on the bus and drove to Mansfield Hotel for a delicious meal to finish off the day. We had donuts for dessert and sang Maris Happy Birthday.
We then hopped back on the bus and watched another movie to relax after this huge day.
Thanks a lot to all the parents who volunteered to come and the teachers who gave up their time. And a big thanks to Miss Powrie and Mr Jenkins for putting this all together.

🍧 Non Snow Day 🍕
Last Friday, while most of the Year 6 students went on an excursion to the snow, the rest of the year enjoyed what one student called the "best school day ever."
Our day began with a special treat: a visit to the staff room for a hot cup of creamy hot chocolate. Back in the classroom, we had free time filled with board games, activity books, ping pong, and more.
After recess, as everyone played and had fun, Miss McLeod surprised us with a huge bucket of ice cream, cones, chocolate sauce, and sprinkles! The rooms erupted in excitement as we crowded around the table to get our ice cream, making a mess of the sprinkles and syrup.
When we finished our dessert (because dessert obviously comes before lunch), we headed up to the gym to help Mr. Zach replace stickers on the HPV vehicles. But we weren't the only ones hard at work, as Miss McLeod was also busy heating up a delicious lunch for us all!
When we returned from the gym, we were greeted by the incredible sight of pizzas waiting for us on the table. We quickly washed our hands and ran to the table. There were everyone's favourite flavours, margherita, hawaiian, and meat lovers. We eagerly dug into the pizza and thanked Miss McLeod, for she had made this the best day ever!
But little did we know, there was still another surprise waiting for us as the school day was coming to an end. After lunch, we played on laptops, watched a movie, and chatted with friends. Then, our amazing teacher came with one more treat for us—lollies galore! As we enjoyed them, we felt incredibly thankful to have such a thoughtful and wonderful teacher.
