Year 5 & 6

Around our level

On Thursday, 13th February, students took part in the highly anticipated Captains’ Day. The school captains gathered to discuss their leadership roles and set goals for the year ahead. They shared some fantastic ideas on how to make a positive impact on the school community.

Following their discussions, the captains organized a series of engaging activities for the Year 6 students to participate in after recess. It was inspiring to see them collaborating, listening to one another, and demonstrating mutual respect. While the captains worked closely with Mrs. Haysom, the rest of the Year 5/6 students joined Mr. Hanley and Mrs. Freene for an exciting team-based challenge called ‘Island Adventure’.

After recess, the Year 5 students tested their knowledge in a general quiz, while the Year 6 students took part in the six activities planned by the captains. One of the highlights of the day was a scavenger hunt, where Year 6 students worked in teams to locate 25 specific items outdoors. The challenge? They had to remember all 25 items as a group before setting off! The day also included a fun-filled performance activity, which brought plenty of laughter.

After lunch play, the Year 5 students spent quality time with their Prep buddies, fostering meaningful connections with younger students. Meanwhile, the Year 6 students were divided into teams and given a variety of materials to create something unique. Their creativity and teamwork were on full display, making for an exciting and rewarding experience.

Despite the heat, the students had a fantastic day filled with leadership, teamwork, and plenty of fun!

(A special mention to Achala, one of our Vice Captains, who was unable to attend due to a family holiday.)

Thoughts from our students:

5/6A

I really enjoyed Captains’ Day today. My favorite part had to be organizing the games for the rest of the Year 6s. I loved when we got to create a performance! I can't wait to spend the rest of the year with the captains and my friends!

- Ivy K

I loved Captains’ Day. I liked setting up the little activities for the other year sixes. And I loved working with people you don’t normally hang out with. I also really liked doing that creativity activity, because it was so fun.

- Violet S

As a Year 5 student I had lots of fun with our buddies and the quiz. It was also fun doing the island thing with Noah, Ollie and Cruze.

- Jye C

Captain's Day was a very fun day, and I absolutely loved the scavenger hunt that happened for Year 6. I also enjoyed the crafting session we had towards the end of the day, and I puzzled my brains a lot during the Island Escape game that we played first.

- Eva A

5/6B

I had heaps of fun setting up and participating in the day. My favorite part was when we did the scavenger hunt on the oval as well as setting up the games in the gym with the rest of the captains.

- Cooper H

I thought Captains’ Day was really fun; planning the activities and having fun designing and playing with fellow grade sixers for pretty much the whole day!

- Hunter W

The gym games were super fun and a great way to start the day, although it was hot. During  the scavenger hunt our group didn't forget any of the items so we got full points. The art activity was one of the best bits because my group just worked easily together so the farm was nice to make. Overall it's been an amazing day.

- Emma W

I loved Captain's Day, working on teamwork, creativity, and remembering things, and I got to make a random noodle hat with my group. - Kaylea R

5/6C

I think  it was an amazing way to build up teamwork, confidence and friendship and not just with your friends. My thoughts on today is that not everything's about friends. It's about working with people you may not be friends with but you still show leadership by accepting it.

- Charlee R

I really enjoyed Captains’ Day today. I loved all of the fun, team building games we played as well as getting to figure out what each captain role was doing this year and what we could do to improve our school in 2025. We started by sitting around a table and discussing what we would do this year as captains. Then we set up fun games in the gym and then went into teams and played them. After lunch we did a scavenger hunt on the oval and finished off by making paper creations and showing them to everyone. It was a great day!

- Zoe R

Captain's Day was really fun. I got to organize all of it and all the activities were really great.  We performed a little play and we did some sporty activities and at the end we played space jump.

- Kaden D

I thought it was great setting up all the activities and playing it. Another thing was the memory scavenger hunt, it was all very skill-based and fun.
