Year 3 & 4

Around our level

This week in Year 3 and 4, we have been working hard on setting up our writer’s notebooks. A writer's notebook is a valuable tool that nurtures creativity, self-expression, and writing skills. It serves as a personal space where our students can jot down ideas, stories, reflections, and observations. Our Year 3/4 students have been writing down ideas and prompts for use during writing time. By using a writer’s notebook, children develop a habit of writing regularly, which strengthens their confidence and fluency in expressing their thoughts.

Our writer’s notebooks also become a place for experimenting with different writing styles, such as poetry, narratives, and descriptive passages. This freedom allows our students to develop their unique writing voice and explore their imagination.

A writer’s notebook is also a useful tool for capturing personal experiences and emotions. Students may write about their daily lives, dreams, or things they find fascinating, making the writing process meaningful and engaging. Teachers can guide students by providing prompts or encouraging them to revisit past entries for inspiration.

Ultimately, a writer’s notebook fosters a love for writing, which is what we definitely want to encourage in our Year 3/4 students!

Some thoughts from our students:

Isla A (3/4A) - I think it’s fun because whenever I have a good idea, I get to write it into my notebook.

Aubree B (3/4A) - I get to express all my thoughts and write stories from this.

Levi B (3/4B) - I really like writing in my writer's notebook and finding the shiny ideas we have.

Paityn E (3/4B) - I like learning about how to use our writer's notebooks and how to keep them organised.
