I continue to be impressed with how smoothly the College has been operating following the commencement of the year 4 weeks ago. This is testament to the contribution from all staff and students, and the support provided from families.
We often speak about fostering a young-adult learning environment. The independence and personal responsibility being displayed by students significantly contributes to this culture. I would like to commend our students who day-in-day-out try their best, maintain routines and expectations, and generally have a positive outlook of their schooling here at the College.
Unfortunately, however, we have observed a concerning increase in derogatory comments or 'jokes' that are sexist in nature, or generally highly inappropriate and offensive. These comments are being said publicly, being overheard by staff or students, and in some instances directed at specific individuals. Some students are passive bystanders, while others are encouraging and laughing along at these comments and essentially enabling culture and saying it is OK.
Today I spoke with all staff and students about the importance of values, inclusive of respecting others. Society does not accept or support this type of behaviour, and there is no place for this in our College. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect, whether it is individuals or groups of people, and that 'words matter'. Whether it is a joke or otherwise, it is offensive, it impacts others and it is a culture we do not want to encourage in society or in our College.
I have asked staff to issue automatic demerit points when students make disrespectful, hurtful or derogatory comments about individuals or groups of people. Students who show patterns of this behaviour will be captured in our behaviour processes, and lead to loss of good standing, behaviour contracts, suspension or even review of their residential boarding contract agreement. It is important that all of our students feel welcome, respected and safe, and that the College is there to support them. We do not tolerate behaviour that does not uphold our values of respect - respect for yourself, and respect for others.
I ask all students to reflect on this message, avoid buying in to this culture, stand up for what is right and think about the type of person they wish to portray to others.
Long Weekend
Wishing all of our students, family and staff a safe and enjoyable long weekend ahead. We look forward to welcoming back our students to boarding on Monday afternoon after 4:00pm.
