From the Year 5 Classroom

Welcome to Year 5! We are excited to begin this new academic year and look forward to working together to support your child’s learning and development. This year promises to be full of exciting challenges, new discoveries, and personal growth for each student.

Year 5 students are encouraged to read at home for a minimum of 80 minutes per week. This is to be recorded in their school diary. Diaries are used at school throughout the week, so we ask that rather than taking diaries home, children recorded their reading each morning as part of their daily set up.  Diaries will be checked by class teachers each Friday.

This year, Year 5 students will participate in Specialist classes on Thursday and Friday. Students may wear their PE uniform both days.

Our Year 5 Learning Support Officer is Danni Blick who will be working with us each day.

Literacy

Our Year 5 literacy block is in full swing. We are aiming to develop strong reading, writing, and spelling skills. Each week, we focus on a daily review of previous learnings, essential literacy foundations, including grapheme-phoneme sounds, long and short vowels, spelling patterns, and vocabulary words of the day. Students refine their skills through dictation, sentence expansion, and both independent and paired fluency reading. Our class novel, War Horse by Michael Morpurgo, is sparking discussions and critical thinking. We also aim to give students authentic reading and writing experiences, alongside regular handwriting and typing practice.

Maths

Our Year 5's, aim to reinforce key skills daily and build confidence in numeracy. Each session begins with some warmup activities and a daily review of previous learnings to strengthen understanding and retention.

We are currently exploring factors and multiples and data representation, including line graphs.

Inquiry

Healthy living is the focus of our Inquiry unit.

Religious Education

We are currently studying a unit about ‘People of Prayer’.
