Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

A warm welcome to our new and returning students and families! We are excited for another year of learning, growth, and cultural connection at McCarthy Catholic College. Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander team is here to support every student throughout their educational journey.

This term, students will have many opportunities to engage in cultural activities both within the school and the wider community. We respect that every cultural journey is unique and encourage students to participate in ways that feel right for them. Our programs are embedded in the curriculum and provide meaningful opportunities for connection, learning, and personal growth.

New Team Members

We’re excited to welcome Layla Dobson and Ethan Allen to our Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Support and Inclusion teams. They will be working alongside Lisa to support students across various subjects and year levels. We look forward to the positive impact they will have on our school community.

Congratulations to Charlize Corcoran and Anika Boney on their selection for this prestigious program. We look forward to seeing their journey unfold.

Programs

Junior Brothers Program – Supporting young Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander men in self-awareness, goal setting, and cultural identity through mentorship and community connections.

‘Ngaar Wirribiiyaan’ Girls Program – Organised by Gomeroi Education and Training, this initiative empowers young women in their cultural, academic, and career journeys. Due to class sizes, participation may vary each term, ensuring all students have the opportunity to be involved over time.

Gamilaraay Language Sessions – Led by Odee and the Maran Giirr team, these sessions celebrate and revitalize the Gamilaraay language, strengthening cultural pride and identity.

Cultural Dance Groups – Due to high interest, students will need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) form. If needed, multiple groups will be formed to allow more students to participate.
