Chess Season Starts for 2025

The chess season has started at McCarthy Catholic College with the traditional Staff vs Student game. On Friday, seven staff members challenged the McCarthy Players to games of chess. It was pleasing to see so many players having a great time and was a chance for some of the representative players to show off their skills.

This year, the students claimed the day with many winning their games. I thank the staff for giving up their time to play against the students.

This year, the McCarthy Chess Club will be taking part in the Interschool Chess Challenge, the NSW Secondary School Competition, and games against regional schools like Farrar and Oxley, as well as the invitational games in Armidale. Hopefully this year players will get the chance to travel to Gunnedah to play against St Mary’s. There will also be online games against Aurora College.

The Chess Club is open to both representative and social players. All members have the opportunity to play against other schools. The Intra School Chess Competition will determine who will be representing the school this year.

The Chess Club runs every Friday, second break, in J3. All are welcome to come.

Fun Chess Fact

Norway’s Magnus Carlsen wins the longest game in World Chess Championship History, defeating Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi in a game lasting 136 moves and nearly 8 hours.
