From the classroom

Start Up Program

At the beginning of each year, right across the school, we have a strong focus on our start up program. This is where classes build strong relationships with their teachers, edducation support staff and other students. They also work on setting up structures and routeins in the classroom and around the school. Having consistent, predictable routeins sets our students up well for a successful year of learning.

Literacy and Numeracy Tips to Help Your Child Every Day

Supporting childrens learning at home optimises their learning in real life situations, this helps students apply learning and therefore build stronger connections to retain the information.

Helping to Support Literacy at Home (Ideas from ‘Literacy and Numeracy Tips to Help Your Child Every Day’)

Some ideas to support your child in Literacy

  • Sharing rhymes, poems and songs and encourage your child to join in.
  • Sharing and talking about family histories and family photos.
  • Discuss your child’s favourite toy or a pet.
  • Set aside time for reading every day. Reading before bedtime is a good habit to get into. Remember to fill in the school reading record.
  • Position yourself so your child can see the words and the pictures.
  • Run your finger across the page with each word to help your child identify and remember words and sounds.

Some ideas to support your child in Numeracy

  • Ask your child questions like these to encourage them to investigate maths:
    • What shapes can you see?
    • How could we measure the...?
    • How will we find half?
    • What is the best way to share the...?
    •  How do I get from … to …?
    • Which is closer: the sandpit or the swing?
    • How tall can you build a tower before it falls?
  • Cooking and using quantities eg. a litre of milk
  • Counting and grouping objects.
  • Browsing catalogues
  • Helping to organise an itinerary using timetables
  • Encourage your child to work out how much change you will get after buying something.

Prep Update

This year we are very pleased to welcome our new Prep students to the school. Our classes have been busy keeping cool, and becoming familiar with the school buildings, playgrounds and getting to know the staff and students.

These first few weeks will be spent building routines and relationships in and out of the classroom. We have started our Grade 6 Buddy Program with Grade 6 students eating and playing with their Prep/Grade 1 buddy.
