Maximising our Student Learning Engagement

Strategies for Full Participation in Class

At St John's Primary School, we are committed to creating a dynamic and inclusive learning environment where every student feels valued and engaged. Active participation in class enhances learning, builds confidence, and fosters a sense of belonging. Here are some of the strategies we use to ensure full participation in our classrooms.

1. We Create a Welcoming Environment

At St John’s, our classrooms are safe, inclusive spaces where students feel encouraged to share their ideas without fear of judgment. From the first day of school, we establish clear expectations for respect and participation, ensuring that every child feels comfortable contributing to discussions and activities.

2. Use Think-Pair-Share Activities

This simple yet effective strategy allows our students to think critically, collaborate, and express their thoughts with confidence. By first reflecting individually, then discussing with a partner before sharing with the class, even our quieter students feel prepared and supported in expressing their ideas.

3. Incorporate Technology

At St John’s, we embrace digital tools such as interactive quizzes, discussion boards, and educational apps such as ' SunSet Maths' to enhance engagement. These tools provide alternative ways for students to participate, catering to different learning styles and preferences.

4. Incorporate Hands-On Learning

Our students thrive when learning is interactive and experiential. Our differentiated tasks  provide meaningful opportunities for participation beyond traditional formats. Students may use games to consolidate their learning, solving puzzles or using hands on activities to cement their learning of concepts and skills.

5. Provide Positive Reinforcement

Celebrating student participation is integral to our approach at St John’s. We use verbal praise, class rewards, house points and constructive feedback to encourage engagement, ensuring students feel recognised and motivated to contribute.

6. Foster a Growth Mindset

We nurture a growth mindset by teaching our students that mistakes are valuable learning opportunities. By encouraging resilience and curiosity, we create a culture where students feel confident to take risks and actively participate in their learning journey.

At St John's Primary School, we are dedicated to ensuring that every student is engaged and involved in their education. By fostering a welcoming environment, incorporating innovative teaching strategies, and celebrating student participation, we empower our learners to reach their full potential.

Together, let’s build classrooms where every student has a voice and feels inspired to learn!
