Explore the Learning in Prep

English

The Preps will begin a new Core Knowledge unit this week, ‘Kings and Queens.’ The students will learn about the roles of Kings and Queens and the royal family, before exploring other kings and queens within fairytales. The Preps will also continue their author study of Julia Donaldson. During the next two weeks they will focus on the texts, ‘Stickman’ and ‘Zog and the Flying Doctors’ The students will be explicitly taught rhyme, vocabulary, syntax and grammar through these texts. They will practice writing modelled sentences that require the students to identify the ‘who’ ‘doing’ and ‘where’ components of a sentence.

The students will also be revising taught sounds through explicit phonics, handwriting and reading fluency instruction.

Mathematics

Students will continue to learn about length and capacity, as well as an introduction to bundling sticks to represent numbers.

Beach School Excursion

The Prep students had a brilliant time at their first excursion, walking down to the Barwon Heads River for 'Beach School'. The students followed the journey of a short-finned eel to explore the changing habitat, flora and fauna as they followed her migration from the top of the Otway’s, down the Barwon River to the coral reef. The students connected with our local environment and learnt about where our drinking water comes from, the importance of healthy waterways and the animals and plants that rely on the Barwon River and Great Southern Ocean. Working in small groups the students also made their own river with bamboo pipes.

SWPBS Dojo Points

At Barwon Heads Primary School, we value the importance of positive feedback in supporting student growth and wellbeing. Our Dojo Points system celebrates students who consistently demonstrate our core values. of Respect, Responsibility, and Being Your Best. Students work towards earning 200 Dojo Points, which they can redeem for a special reward—either a movie session or a delicious donut! They can choose to 'cash in' their dojo points when they get to 50, 100, or 150 points, for a different reward. This system helps motivate and encourage positive behaviour while reinforcing the strong, supportive culture of our school community.
