WARATAH BEACH CAMP!

What an amazing camp!  Apart from some rain that stopped us from going over to the beach again on the last morning, we had beautiful weather and all of the students met the challenges that they faced with a positive and fun attitude.  They were extremely supportive of each other and were able to grow in confidence and they will take this confidence into their daily lives.  Waratah Beach has to be not just one of the most beautiful beaches in Victoria but also in all of Australia.  I hope that your child was able to articulate how appreciative they were for the support that you gave to take up the opportunityto take part in the camp that they will remember for a lifetime.

Literacy

We are continuing our study on Ancient Greece and Rome.  We looked at the different forms of government that the acient Greece used and what were the benefits and detractors of each of them.  This week we are studying Athens and Sparta and the similarities and differences between them.

We are still writing Information Reports.  The students have completed an excellent report on an animal of their choice and they are moving onto writing an Information Report on a household item.  Much more interesting that you may think!

Maths

A tough couple of weeks coming up where we revisit everybodies favouite....FRACTIONS!  This is a 'nice' segway from decimals and hopefully we will all be able to see the connections between the two.  Obviously a very challenging topic and if the students can see patterns and sequences and are able to convert them into fractions so they can compare them, they are well set to enter Year 7 for of confidence.

We are still studying Time in the applied side of maths.  While the main focus is on elapsed time and how long certain things take, we are also having to do a crash course on reading the time.  We have found that a large number of our students find it difficult to read an analogue clock face.  While we mostly see digital time everywhere from on our phones, computers etc. there are still many times during the day where we see clock faces.

Inquiry

In 'Museums in Motion' we are going to be learning off each-other.  Each of us will be studying a modern Australian from either the 19th, 20th or 21st Century and the imapct that they have had on the shaping of Australia.  The next couple of weeks will see us enhancing our research skills so that we are well-prepared when it comes to our presentations.  So in effect, we will not only learn about the figurre that we research, but we will learn from all of our classmates' efforts when it comes to them presenting.

Wellbeing

It's been amazing to see the positive impact that our Berry Street Educational Model has been having on the students.  I find that they are more focused, less stressed and have a much higher regard for the value of their learning and the integral part that they play in this themselves.  We start everyday with a Morning Circle, which is a fantastic routine that we are in.  It provides the students with a calm, fun, non-threatening environment from the minute they walk in the door.  We greet each other, outline the day, focus on our values that we deem to be important, enjoy each other's announcements and have a fun activity that sets us up for a positive day of learning.
