UPCOMING LEARNING:
LITTLE LEARNERS
In the next fortnight of learning, students will continue to practice the r-controlled vowel sounds ‘ir’, ‘ur’, and ‘er’. Students will explore their understanding of the phoneme (sound they hear) /er/ as represented in three different spelling combinations 'ir' in shirt, 'ur' in surf and 'er' in fern. This will allow them to recognise alternative graphemes (letter combinations) which also make an /er/ sound to extend on their understanding e.g. word where 'or' makes an /er/ sound.
WRITING:
This coming week students will be participating in National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) for a reading of 'The Truck Cat' written by Deborah Frenkel. This exciting event is held every year, with a different picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, family day cares, childcare centres, bookshops, family homes and many other places around the country. Students will engage in activities which unpack characters and themes in response to the text.
Furthermore, as our Ancient Egypt Unit comes to an end students will be moving onto Continents, Maps and Countries. In this writing block students will discover maps and globes as convenient ways to show the locations and some of the human and physical characteristics of geographical elements. Building on their prior experiences of maps in their Inquiry Units, to describe and communicate the geography of different parts of the world and help you get to places both near and far.
NUMERACY:
Over the next fortnight, students will draw on their understanding of partitioning to develop concepts of addition and subtraction through words and stories with concrete and pictorial representations. Students are introduced to the number sentence where they use the ‘+’, ‘-’ and ‘=’ symbols to represent addition and subtraction number stories. They are supported in this skill by using five-frames, ten-frames, number bonds, discrete bar models and number lines.
INQUIRY:
In Inquiry, Grade 1 students will continue to create an idea of what 'community' is including how it feels to be part of a community and why it is important for developing a sense of belonging and identity. Student will identify features of their local community to reflect on what services are available in emergency situations and their roles in maintaining a safe community.
Wellbeing:
Students will utilise their understanding of the 'Zones of Regulation' to practice problem-solving in role playing scenarios. By engaging in collaborative discussions, students will brainstorm a range of solutions by putting themselves in someone else's shoes. In practicing empathy students can apply useful coping strategies that promote a positive attitudes and feelings.
