Year 6 News

From Ben F, Year 6 Teacher
Fractured Fairytales
We have had a busy start to Term 2 in year 6 across the whole education spectrum. In writing we learnt to use a new planning technique C-Space to help us plan out detailed and interesting narratives.
Over the course of the last 2 weeks we were challenged to devise and draft a fractured fairytale, using the classic fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm and dragging them out of Medieval Europe and into the 21st century.
Some of the crazy story plots revolved around Hansel and Gretel becoming cannibals, The Big Bad Wolf going viral, the Prince and Pea and Red Ring Hood seeking vengeance for the death of her Grandma. Here is Siman’s take on Goldilocks and the 3 Aliens.
Maths
We have loved practising fluency in Times Tables Rockstars, with everyone striving to ‘Go Green’ and be able to recall all their basic multiplication facts in under 4 seconds.
At the time of writing the following year 6’s lead the school in their recall times:
Teddy 6F - aka James Boomshakalaka - .94 seconds
Seng Guan - aka Ash Burns - .99 seconds
Muhammed - 6B - aka Bronnie Chinnock - 1.04 seconds
Kevin 6A - aka Cove Squeakdiggler - 1.16 seconds
Reading
We have been excited to start book club, here is Amelia and Maya to give you a rundown on whats happening in 6E.
This week we started book club, our book is Exit Through The Gift Shop, in our opinion it’s great! They told us divide the book into six sections so that we read the correct amount each week. “My role this week is Word Master” (Amelia) “and mine is Passage Picker” (Maya). The roles in book club are illustrator, connector, summariser, predictor, word master, passage picker, discussion director. So far Book Club has been a great experience and we hope it will continue this way!
