From Joey, Year 1 Teacher

Year One Assembly Highlights

Last Friday, the Year One cohort gathered with families to celebrate the achievements we've made since the beginning of Term Two. Everyone was proud of our JSRC representatives, Eve and Aradhya, who confidently led the assembly and ensured the event ran smoothly with their dedication and leadership.

Tallia and Lotus from 1B delivered a thoughtful Acknowledgement of Country, reflecting the work we’ve done during our morning circles and our ongoing respect and connection to First Nations peoples.

We also congratulated our RISE award recipients, who have demonstrated a growth mindset and a strong commitment to challenging themselves on their learning journey.

A big well done to all 1A students for sharing their learning and presenting their progress and achievements to our school community!

Phonics Plus

Over the past two weeks, students have been busy reading and spelling both one-syllable and multisyllabic words containing the grapheme–phoneme correspondences (GPCs) ‘ai’, ‘ay’, and ‘a-e’.

They also explored compound words—learning to read, spell, and explain their meanings. Students continued to build their accuracy, fluency, and comprehension through reading passages and writing dictated sentences.

Reading

Following our morning Phonics sessions, students and teachers focused on reading fluency and comprehension. They practised identifying, comparing, and contrasting the features of fiction and non-fiction texts, helping to deepen their understanding and reading strategies.

Maths

Over the past fortnight, students have been working hard to strengthen their understanding and fluency in addition facts. They improved their mental maths skills and number sense by exploring multiple strategies using both physical and digital tools.

Specifically, students developed fluency in part-part-whole knowledge to 10 and learned to reason using strategies such as:

  • Counting on
  • Bonds to 10
  • Adding 10
  • Doubles
  • Bridging to 10
  • The commutative property

It’s been exciting to see their growing confidence and enthusiasm in tackling Maths challenges!
