INTERMEDIATE GIRLS STATE FINALS

On Wednesday 14th of May the Korumburra Intermediate girls volleyball team made their way to Dandenong volleyball centre to face off against the other 7 teams who had won their way through to state finals. The intermediate girls did not drop a match on their way through southern zone finals last Friday and had a short turn around to prepare for states.

The Korumburra team was composed of Imogen Camp, Jessica Churchill, Leah Kirkbride, Amelia Le Serve, Ainsley Logan, Gypsy Quaife and Georgia Scarce. This team was a mix of regular volleyball players and some very athletic newcomers. As one of the few country teams at the event, they squared off against some very experienced teams in Monbulk, McKinnon and Melton. The girls played their hearts out, and while we lost all three matches, they caused quite a stir when they managed to take a set of McKinnon who eventually went on to the grand-final. The girls also won the hearts of the Melton team who were quite vocal in cheering them on from the sidelines.

As the day progressed the girls grew in confidence and even started to play a few new systems resulting in a many more three hit attack-balls. One of the opposition coaches remarked that “they just kept getting it back.” While few of their competitors had even heard of Korumburra, let alone pronounce it, before today, they will certainly remember it now.

It was a pleasure coaching the girls, their sportsmanship and inclusiveness was a great credit to their families and the wider college community. A big thankyou to the players and all of the PE/Sport staff who have spent so much time into preparing the and organising the volleyball teams again this year. Thankyou also to Mr Ladd for helping out on the day.
