Literacy

Phonics: During our Phonics lessons this term, students will continue learning how to say the initial sounds, key letters of the alphabet and how to blend them together to read short words. They will also learn how to write these letters and short words using the correct starting point, direction and size. Students will also learn how to combine some of these short words to read and write short sentences. Lastly, students will learn how to read and identify important High Frequency Words.

 

Reading: In reading this term students will continue using their ability to blend letters together learnt in our Phonics lessons to read words in their Just Right books. Students will use the clues in their books to make predictions about their stories, identify patterns in the text in their books and make connections between their own lives and their books. They will also start developing new comprehension strategies, such as

using pictures to solve what some words are and summarizing their stories.

 

Writing: In Writing this term students will continue writing recounts of their weekends and other special experiences. They will start developing how to include “what” they did, “where” they did it, “who” they did it with and “when” they did it. They will also learn about how to write their letters and words on the lines correctly in their writing books, and to create spaces between their words. Students will also learn to transfer the spelling skills learnt in their Phonics lessons to their Writing lessons, such as using the sounding out strategy and knowing where to identify and how to use their High Frequency Words to spell them correctly. Students will continue developing their ability to write letters of the alphabet correctly as well.

Maths

In Math this term students will continue learning different counting patterns in both forwards and backwards directions. They will learn to use positional language accurately, such as below, above, on, next to,

etc. They will learn to partition whole numbers into two and three smaller parts. They will learn how to identify the missing part of a part, part whole number sequence. For example, three and “what” makes five? With the answer being “two.” Students will also begin to learn how to create data sets by asking each other simple questions and turning the survey information into picture graphs. Students will continue practicing how to write zero to ten numerals accurately as well. They will also learn how to identify basic shapes, such as circles, triangles, squares and rectangles.

Inquiry

Inquiry

During Inquiry this term students will explore a unit of learning titled ‘Community Helpers.’ In this unit students will learn about important people in the wider community, where they work, and how they help us. Through activities and discussions, students will explore the roles of helpers and develop an appreciation for the people who make our community a better place." In Inquiry students will also learn about the historical and cultural importance of Anzac Day to our country of Australia. Lastly, students will also learn about the cultural significance of NAIDOC Week and how this week helps to improve relationships between

Indigenous Australians and Non-Indigenous Australians.

Social and Emotional Learning (S.E.L.)

During our S.E.L. program this term students will learn about how to Identify, Control and Express their emotions in a healthy and safe way. They will learn about the importance of and how to proactively use a Growth Mindset to help them persevere during challenging learning experiences. Students will learn how to treat each other, their teachers and families kindly and respectfully, and learn the meaning of these phrases. Lastly, students will also learn how to be mindful of themselves and the present moment so they can navigate their relationships and learning experiences with success.
