Welcome to another exciting term of Visual Arts!
PREP:
Students in Prep have started their egg themed artwork featuring their choice of a chick or dinosaur. At the end of Term 1, they developed their fine motor skills by scrunching and gluing tissue paper onto a paper egg template, and this term they completed 2 guided drawings. They will choose which character to have hatching out of their egg, and experiment with foam stampers to create a background.
Students have also participated in a guided drawing workshop to create their own version of Joan Miro's "Sun Eater" using paint sticks. They had to identify basic shapes and lines, and carefully follow directions to create the piece.
GRADE 1/2:
Students in grades 1 and 2 finished their Term 1 by completing their Ramadan hanging decor. They made 2 oil resist paintings with oil pastels and liquid water colour paints, then cut out their desired shapes. These were glued onto coloured paper, before students practiced 'bubble cutting'. Students used tape and yarn to create their desired arrangement.
This term, grade 1 and 2 students have completed a guided drawing workshop where they created their own versions of Joan Miro's "Sun Eater" using paint sticks. They practiced making different shapes and lines as well as discussing each other's artwork by commenting on things they liked during a 'gallery walk'.
They will next begin a portrait unit based on the work of Pablo Picasso.
GRADE 3/4:
At the end of Term 1, students completed their Ramadan hanging decor art pieces. Throughout the term, they experimented with printmaking using gelli pads. Students used a brayer and various tools to create patterns and shapes in the paint on the gelli pad, then made prints by laying paper on the pad and rubbing with their hands. They then traced and cut out Ramadan themed shapes (or other, if they chose) onto their dried printed papers, and added yarn to finish their pieces.
For term 2, students in grades 3 and 4 have started researching and planning for their next unit: junk relief sculptures. So far, they have seen a documentary featuring an artist who makes giant sculptures made from plastics found on the beach and have learned about different types of sculptures. Some classes have started forming a 'shadow box' from which to start their sculpture.
GRADE 5/6:
At the end of Term 1, students in grade 5 and 6 completed their Ramadan quilling project. They experimented with making squeegee paintings for the backgrounds, then practiced paper quilling (turning strips of paper into tight coils). These were glued into an arrangement of their choosing.
This term, students began with a guided drawing workshop, learning how to create guidelines for drawing a well-proportioned face.
Like the 3/4s, the 5/6s have watched a documentary about an American organisation collecting trash from their local beach and turning it into giant ocean creature sculptures. They have begun researching sculpture-in-the-round and what type of figure (humanoid or animal) they would like to create out of the various 'junk' materials available to them in the art room.
