Earlier this term, our annual Swimming Carnival was a tremendous success, bringing energy, colour and house spirit to the poolside.  Fair and friendly competition saw Abyad house emerge the victor - but we were all winners on the day!

Students enthusiastically competed in traditional swimming events, showcasing determination, teamwork and resilience. Just as importantly, the day offered a wide range of inclusive activities to ensure everyone could get involved. From high-energy water volleyball matches to skipping challenges and friendly basketball games, there was something for every student to enjoy.

It was especially pleasing to see our newest students embracing the occasion. Their willingness to participate - whether in the pool, on the sidelines, or in full house colours -  demonstrated a strong sense of belonging and community. The house pride dress-ups added to the vibrant atmosphere, with creative costumes and bold colours on display throughout the day.

These whole school events play an important role in building relationships beyond the classroom because they create opportunities for students and staff to connect in a different, more relaxed environment. Cheering from the sidelines, dancing to a new personal best (yes – he really did dance for approximately 3 hours non stop!!), participating in novelty activities, laughing at unexpected moments, shooting hoops with mates, turning sausages on the barbie – it creates an opportunity for connection and engagement in unexpected ways. It is positive for students to see their peers demonstrate leadership, resilience, humour and teamwork in new contexts, and teachers are viewed not only as classroom leaders, but as participants and supporters. Whole-school sport is about the sport, competing and being active but it is also about creating positive spaces where relationships can grow and an inclusive school culture is strengthened.

Special shout out to Jarrod Warmington and the staff of the Health & Physical Education Learning Area for their excellent organisation, and to the wider community of staff, student leaders and students who contributed to making the event such a positive and memorable start to the school year.
