An appetite for culture

Our Year 8 Food Studies classes have completed their first assessment task for the year – the Multicultural Food Task.

As part of the task, students researched a country of their choice, exploring its culture and culinary traditions. They then prepared a food item from that country at home and brought it to school to share with the class, creating a vibrant, buffet-style celebration of global cuisine.

Each student presented their dish, introducing the country it came from and explaining a little about the food itself – its ingredients, background, and cultural significance. The classroom quickly transformed into a rich tapestry of flavours, stories and traditions from around the world.

The highlight, of course, was the tasting. Students had the opportunity to try a wide range of foods they may never have experienced before, broadening their palates while deepening their understanding of different cultures. This in turn encouraged further discussion around why food is such an important aspect of cultural identity, how food can evoke feelings, stir memories  adn enrich social occasions.

It was a wonderful way to combine research, presentation skills and cultural appreciation – and a delicious start to the year!

The dark soy noodles tasted really good. Really yummy! I have never tried them before.

I really liked the strawberry shortcake - whoever made it took a lot of time, over it and is very relieved it tastes good!

I really liked the Singapore Noodles,  but my favourite was the macarons.  They were really good. I have had macarons before - but not as good as these ones.

My favourite is definitely the souvlaki! The texture was nice, it had the perfect amount of tomato and tzatziki - I think it makes me feel at home!

My favourite is the creme brulee - you could tell that effort had gone into making it. I have had it before but this time was much better!
