Italian News - Signora Vozzo
Semester 1 Overview 2026
This Semester in Italian, our Prep students will be joyfully immersed in the Italian language through a variety of songs, video clips, movement and gestures. They will listen to and repeat modelled language, building confidence in speaking and understanding Italian in a fun and supportive way.
A strong focus will be placed on the Italian alphabet and sounds, helping students become familiar with pronunciation from the very beginning. Students will also be introduced to simple, everyday questions such as Come ti chiami? (What is your name?), Quanti anni hai? (How old are you?), Come stai? (How are you?), and Cosa ti piace? (What do you like?). They will practise responding to these questions and then asking a partner.
Greetings, colours and numbers will also be explored throughout the semester, supporting students as they begin their Italian language learning journey.
Years 1 and 2 students will continue to build their confidence in Italian by consolidating their understanding of greetings and classroom instructions used during lessons. They will learn a range of new action words, enabling them to talk about and express the activities they enjoy and take part in each day. These will include verbs such as bevo (I drink), dormo (I sleep), gioco (I play), parlo (I speak), and guardo (I watch).
Using modelled language, students will practise forming simple phrases and will have opportunities to present their learning to the class in a supportive environment.
In Term 2, students will focus on learning the names of common classroom objects. They will practise asking and responding to questions such as Dove è la penna? (Where is the pen?) and Hai la matita rossa? (Do you have the red pencil?). To support their learning, students will take part in short, engaging role-plays and skits using the Italian language.
Year 3 and 4 students will continue to develop their ability to introduce themselves in Italian, using descriptive language to talk about physical features such as i capelli neri (black hair) and gli occhi verdi (green eyes). Students will have opportunities to practise with partners and then record their presentations on Seesaw.
Students will also build confidence in asking and responding to questions using appropriate Italian classroom language. This will include expressions such as Può ripetere, per favore? (Could you repeat, please?), Non capisco (I do not understand), and Come si scrive … in italiano? (How do you spell … in Italian?). Students will be encouraged to use this classroom language whenever appropriate during lessons.
Year 5 and 6 students will consolidate and extend their vocabulary about themselves in order to create a short written post in Italian. Topics will include favourite singers, leisure activities, family members and birthdays. Using this language orally with partners will be an important part of lessons, helping students develop fluency and accurate pronunciation.
In Term 2, students will take part in research about an Italian festa. They will then use their learning to create an advertisement encouraging people to attend the festival, combining language skills with cultural understanding and appreciation.
